Mosquito net on the door: types and installation features

Mosquito net on the door: types and features

For thousands of years, humanity has been fighting against insects and dust.

It began from the times of Ancient Greece and Egypt.

At that time, fabric with small cells began to be used. Our grandmothers did this too, nailing gauze with nails or buttons on the windows.

And they hung tulle on the door, which, you will agree, could do little to help. And it didn't look aesthetically pleasing.

Now homemade insect screens are a thing of the past. They have been replaced by window and door mosquito nets, which have great advantages.

Rolled mosquito net for door

This mosquito net is a roll of mesh fabric, which on one side is attached to a drum in a box, and on the other side it holds a false window sill.
The box is equipped with a folding mechanism and is mounted above the entrance doors from the outside. As for the balcony door, the installation location does not matter.

If the mesh is installed on the right or left side, then the false window sill will move horizontally, and if it is installed above the door, it will move according to the principle of blinds, from top to bottom.

The canvas does not need to be removed for the winter and can be installed at any height. Other benefits include practicality, fire resistance, durability, ease of use, and excellent protection against dust, pollen, insects, cigarette butts and other particles.

Sliding mosquito net on the door

The sliding design is not only made on the principle of compartment doors, but also has all their properties. The frame frame can be plastic or aluminum. The mesh consists of guides and rollers. Reliability of movement is ensured by sliders, and the tightness of the structure is ensured by a brush seal.

There is also a drawback to sliding panels - they are not suitable for all doors. It is believed that they are convenient for French glazing of a balcony, least of all for the front door.

Magnetic mesh on the door

The mesh on the door with magnets looks like curtains, along the length of which magnets are placed.
It is very convenient to use. The doors, made of lightweight fabric, close immediately after passing through the magnets using the force of attraction. They diverge with light pressure.

The magnetic mosquito nets on the door are washable and vacuum-cleanable. They also do not interfere with the movement of pets and small children.

The net curtain comes with special buttons or Velcro and pads, with which you can easily install it yourself on a wooden or plastic doorway.

Like other types of mosquito nets, a magnetic door mosquito net reliably protects against dust, pollen, and various insects, despite the light, almost weightless material. Another advantage is the universal size. Thus, it can be installed on non-standard doors.

In addition to the mesh mosquito curtains on the door, there are also swing doors with magnets, which are attached to hinges on one side of the doorway. A magnet is mounted on the other side. It can also be equipped with a closer and it will close on its own.

A mosquito net for a balcony door is a good choice. It should be taken into account that if you do not intend to let animals out of the house, it is better to opt for a roll-on mosquito net.

DIY mosquito door on a wooden frame

If it is not possible to purchase a ready-made mosquito door, you can make it yourself. To do this, you first need to measure the opening and add 40 mm to the width and height. This will be the design size of the finished product.

For manufacturing you will need (using the example of an opening 700x2000 mm):

  1. Mosquito net with an allowance of 20 mm from the design size on each side, which can be purchased at a hardware store.
  2. Wooden beam 10x20 - 4 three-meter sticks. Sold in construction stores.
  3. Power buttons.
  4. Liquid nail glue for wood or universal glue.
  5. Small spring-loaded hinges - 2 sets.
  6. Black wood screws 16 mm and 19 mm long.
  7. Any miniature decorative handles.
  8. The largest size office clips are 15–20 pcs.
  9. A piece of perforated profile for plasterboard - 240 mm, cut into 8 parts of 30 mm each.
  10. Thin magnetic plates with adhesive backing. Can be found in hardware stores or children's art departments.

New products in the production of mosquito nets

Mosquito nets are varied in their characteristics and designs. At the same time, models are constantly being improved, so when choosing one, you need to be aware of the updates. Perhaps the new product will become more useful and functional.

Here are some innovative models.

For animal owners, the Anti-Cat canvas, made of impregnated polyester with a small cell, is suitable.

The mosquito net on the door is stronger and thicker, which means it is reliable, so the animal will not be able to damage it with its claws, teeth or beak and go outside.

This mesh is specially black in color. Cats perceive it as an obstacle, so they don’t really try to leave the house. The product is also available in gray color.

For allergy sufferers and lovers of cleanliness, the Anti-Dust mosquito net is suitable. It is made of very thin polyester threads that create microscopic cells. They protect from street dust and dirt, flower pollen, and at the same time, give comfort and tranquility. The color can be chosen to suit your taste.

Some manufacturers produce meshes with a self-cleaning function, for example the Anti-Pollen mesh (Poll-Tex). It is capable of changing the polarity of electrical charges. That is, when a small particle flies up to the grid, it changes its charge to the opposite one and does not stick to it. Thus, pollen and dust are blocked 100%.

This property makes it easier to care for the anti-mosquito fabric. Just wipe it with a sponge and soapy water, and it will be as good as new.

Prices for mosquito nets on doors

The cost of door mosquito nets varies, which is influenced by several aspects.
For example, the type of canvas, type of profile, simplicity of design, measurement, installation and delivery. It also depends on the material used. Prices start from 3 thousand rubles and end at 7 thousand, depending on the size of the canvas. The average cost of a set is 4,000 rubles.

The Anti-Cat and Anti-Dust nets will cost more. Markup from 600 to 1000 rubles per 1 sq.m. Also, 30% can be added to the base cost for the selected color of the canvas according to the RAL scale.

The lowest price category is the frame mosquito net, and the most expensive is the sliding mosquito net on the door, designed for plastic sliding doors. Additional guides will be required which will affect the cost.

The specific price will be determined by the measurer after taking the dimensions and determining the type of mosquito net. It is worth mentioning that the currently popular magnetic mesh Magic mesh will cost you about 300-500 rubles, and comes in various colors.

Options for anti-mosquito doors

Mosquito doors can have several opening options. Classic - single door opening outwards. We can also produce inward opening doors and double doors for wide openings. Mosquito doors that open inward can only be installed on plastic doors that open outward.

Mosquito doors for balconies and loggias

Installing swing mosquito doors on balconies and loggias is especially important if they are not glazed. Such systems are made from lightweight two-chamber PVC profiles in white or brown. Swing door mosquitoes can be installed on any doors, not necessarily on plastic ones, because such a door is a completely independent element with hinges, handles and a latch. Externally, the mosquito door is a plastic frame with a horizontal impost for strength, in which a mosquito net is installed. It is possible to install hinges with a closer or so-called spring-loaded hinges, which allow the door to close independently. A similar function is performed by a magnetic latch, closing the door after a slight push.

The swing mosquito structure is installed directly into the frame of the existing door, so there must be enough space for the hinges and the latch strike plate, namely at least 40 mm on both sides. To take measurements yourself, it is enough for the manufacturer to provide the width and height of the light opening, and the specialists themselves will add the necessary tolerances. The cost of such doors ranges from 1200 to 4000 rubles per 1 square meter and depends mainly on the choice of filling. Nets impregnated with anti-scratch “anti-cat” and anti-allergenic “anti-dust” will be more expensive. The color of the profile will not significantly increase the price if you choose brown. Installing a mosquito door for a balcony costs an average of 500 rubles per structure, but if you have the tools, you can do the installation yourself.

Swing mosquito systems for entrance doors

For entrance doors, mosquito systems are made of aluminum profiles and can be single-leaf or double-leaf. The design is a frame with a mosquito net fixed inside, which is reinforced by a horizontal impost and a wide threshold overlay that protects the mesh from accidental damage by a foot when leaving. The fittings used are: hinges, handles, latches - similar to balcony systems. A double-leaf mosquito door is characterized by the presence on one of the leaves, called the passive one, of a pin mechanism that fixes it in the closed position. Instead of a shtulka, magnetic latches are also used to provide a similar function. The cost of mosquito doors on an aluminum frame varies from 2,500 to 6,000 rubles per 1 square meter and depends on both the mesh fabric and the color of the profile. Standard colors: white, brown and silver. According to the RAL scale, it is possible to paint in any color you like, which will add about 40% to the cost.

Sliding mosquito doors

For any sliding door systems, be it plastic or aluminum lift-and-slide structures, cold or warm mechanical slides, their own mosquito protection structures are provided. In general, they are all movable elements that are installed on a guide and, thanks to rollers, move in the desired direction. The sliding mosquito door is made of the same profile as the main structure, therefore it costs the same as a sash with infill. In this case, the price can only change depending on the choice of mosquito cloth. A distinctive feature of the installation of such mosquito doors is that they are simply installed on a guide. In some cases, it is necessary to raise or lower the rollers using a hex key to ensure optimal movement of the sash.

Mosquito nets on doors with magnets

Using a special type of mesh curtain with magnets allows you to sleep on a summer night with the balcony door open without fear of becoming a “victim” of mosquitoes.
In essence, a magnetic curtain is a fine mesh that is equipped with magnets for secure attachment in the opening. The presence of a magnet is a sign of the practicality and functionality of the mesh. Why is a magnet so important?

When you leave the balcony, you rarely control the tightness of the closure. If the mesh is not equipped with magnets, it will not close tightly either - there may be a gap through which insects can get into the room. Strong magnets will not allow the door to open, even if there is a draft.

No less popular is a special protective curtain or curtain. It is a canvas of durable and dense material that is hung in the doorway. Magnetic tapes or magnets are sewn along the edges, located at an equal distance from each other. The result is a solid canvas, securely fixed in the opening.

To get into the room, it is enough to slightly push the canvas in the central part, but the curtain will not open due to a draft. As you pass, the magnets will help keep the curtain straight again.

The advantage of the curtain: it can be closed and opened many times without the magnets breaking down. This cannot be said about the frame mosquito net, which can gradually fail during intensive use.

Advantages and disadvantages of magnetic mosquito nets

  • Easy installation: installation can be done by yourself without the help of a specialist;
  • Durability: even with high traffic and frequent opening and closing, the mesh will last a long time;
  • Reliability and functionality;
  • Providing protection not only from insects, but also from poplar fluff, dust and litter;
  • The mesh is easy to wash and install;
  • The low cost of the mesh makes it accessible to users.

The disadvantages of magnetic mesh are associated only with the poor quality of the product. You should choose from a range of products from trusted brands. A common problem with low-quality products is that magnets do not attach well, they quickly fail, they do not fit well, there is a limited number of possible sizes.

Mosquito nets on doors on hinges with a closer

A device for automatically closing the mesh is called a loop with a closer.
This is a practical and functional solution if you need to frequently pass through the sash on which the mesh is installed. This loop is one of the items included in the list of components for the mosquito net.

The mesh itself is a high-strength aluminum structure that is universally suitable for different doorways. The door leaf can be opened from the outside and from the inside.

The package also includes: a magnetic holder, a damper mechanism, a special vertical bar, and fasteners.

Hinged mosquito net

The hinged blades are designed to provide the simplest and most practical use of a product that is effective in repelling insects. The hinged mesh is equipped with an aluminum profile, and the hinges of this system have a special mechanism that closes automatically.

The advantages of this type of mesh include:

  • Practicality;
  • Easy to use;
  • Attractive price;
  • Versatility;
  • Durability.
  • The materials used ensure the reliability and stability of the structure.

Advantages and disadvantages of roller mosquito nets

  • This option is considered one of the most popular and in demand due to its ease of use and attractive cost;
  • The design of the product is aesthetic, and the system itself is compact and does not take up much space;
  • Universally suitable for any doorway;
  • During the cold season, there is no need to remove the canvas and store until spring;
  • Easy care and cleaning;
  • It differs favorably from the frame mesh in its ease of opening and installation;
  • No free space is required to operate the product without problems;
  • The system can be made in different colors.

The disadvantages include the following: due to the presence of a box, the design may seem bulky; debris and dirt can get into the box, which will harm the functioning of the system.

Material of manufacture

Mosquitoes are classified according to the material of manufacture and type of construction. The mesh is made from the following materials:

  • Nylon has excellent elasticity, budget cost and good strength;
  • Cotton is a natural material that is preferable, but due to this factor the canvas will cost more. It is highly breathable and environmentally friendly;
  • Fiberglass is a separate variation of a polymer with a fiberglass base. It has biological resistance, long service life and strength characteristics.

The most common fabric is polyester. It is synthetic with natural fibers. Cotton creates strength and lightness, and synthetic fabric provides immunity to aggressive environmental factors. The color range is varied, it is possible to manufacture according to the client’s requirements, but most often the design is in light gray. It is visually almost transparent due to its thin section.

Features of roller shutter mosquito net

The operation of the system is based on the operating principle of blinds. You can twist the fabric into a roll using a special handle or cord. The canvas is kept in the box until it is needed to be used.

When the canvas is unfolded, it fits tightly to the frame, protecting it from insects, fluff, and debris from the street. Affordable prices for mesh from manufacturing companies allow you to install them without compromising your budget. Meshes can be ordered according to individual parameters.

Mosquito net in roll and pleated system for doors

A roller mosquito net is a fabric that is rolled into a roll, located in a special aluminum box.
It can be mounted on the outside above the doorway (which will ensure vertical movement of the mesh) or on one of the sides. In this case, the false window sill will move horizontally.

The product moves along special guides fixed on the sides or at the top and bottom, and completely covers the doorway. In this state, it is fixed using an end device. Then, under the influence of spring inertia, the product easily twists back to its previous roll position.

To eliminate the possibility of dirt getting in and the formation of gaps between the doorway and the mosquito net, as well as to ensure silent sliding of the product, the structure is equipped with a sealing brush. It is installed in the groove of the final profile and box. The average cost of a product is 4,500 rubles. It is better to entrust the installation of a roller mosquito door to a professional.

Rolling mosquito doors are characterized by the following advantages:

  • the net does not need a special place for storage, since it can not be removed all year;
  • the roller system is unnoticeable both from the inside and outside, which does not spoil the appearance of the door;
  • does not require additional space for opening.

The pleated system is fixed on a special frame. The product has the appearance of an accordion when folded, and in the open position it is represented by a rigid door. The canvas can be plain, colored or have a variety of patterns.

Mosquito nets for pleated doors are most often used as a protective barrier against insects in large openings. You can buy the product from 6,000 rubles. Installing a pleated system on a door requires the use of special tools and special work skills. Therefore, to install the product, you should seek help from specialists.

Making a wooden frame

Taking into account the size of my door 70x190, 4 bars are needed. The same amount will be required for a maximum canvas size of 100x200 cm. The diagram is as follows.

Fig.1. Wooden frame.

The first compartment in the photo is the future hole for the dog. Its height is about 40 cm (the dog is not big). The second crossbar is needed to install the handle. It is located at a distance of about 100 cm from the bottom bar.

Before describing the construction process, it should be said about the method of attaching the bars to each other. In my opinion, the most reliable is an adhesive connection with a groove. Those. A quarter is made on the pieces to be joined and glued together.

Fig.2. Connecting frame parts.

You can also fasten the bars to each other using metal corners or self-tapping screws. However, as the practice of operating a similar structure previously shows, over time this type of connection becomes loose.

I have described the main fundamental points, now the process itself. First, we cut the bars to the required length and mark the locations of the grooves.

Fig.3. Preparation for making grooves.

Next, we begin cutting out the quarters. In order for everything to turn out smoothly, without the use of industrial equipment, I cut out the grooves simultaneously on all identical parts, having previously tightened them using clamps.

Fig.4. Marking of blanks.

You can cut out a quarter using a hacksaw and chisel. But because I have a router, I made them with it, it turns out smoother and more accurate.

Fig.5. Preparation for milling grooves.

Fig.6. Milled quarters.

After all the grooves have been cut, it is necessary to assemble the structure. To do this, lay out all the parts on a flat surface and glue them together. To do this, use moisture-resistant PVA glue. As practice has shown, joints of wooden parts using modern PVA glue survive the winter outdoors perfectly.

In order to obtain a high-quality adhesive joint, it must be loaded, for example, tightened with clamps.

Fig.7. Gluing the frame.

During the assembly of the frame, it is necessary to monitor its geometry using a square. You should also promptly remove excess glue. After which we leave the assembled structure for a day.

How to take measurements

Before you begin assembling a wooden frame, you need to take accurate measurements. The standard profile width of a wooden frame is twenty-five millimeters. It turns out that when the sash is open, the profile will not be visible, so you need to add another fifty millimeters to the opening for width and height. Make sure that there is space on the side (from the side of the house wall) to install the fasteners. You should have forty-five millimeters at the top and forty at the bottom.

If you see that at the top the frame “goes” beyond the quarter (features of old windows in “Stalin” windows), in this case the fasteners are installed on the sides.

How to make a wooden frame

  1. Using a hacksaw, cut the wooden beam into four parts. For the top strips, you need to subtract six millimeters on each side. If this is not done, the door will be difficult to open.
  2. Prepare the vertical slats. On each side, remove three millimeters from the bottom and top so that the planks meet the transverse ones.
  3. Take a self-tapping screw and dip it in machine oil. It should fit into the tree easily. If you want, you can drill holes in advance using a drill (drill size - two millimeters),
  4. Now you can assemble the wooden frame so that the self-tapping screw “fits” into the doorway.
  5. Using a miter gauge, check that all four corners are ninety degrees.
  6. Now you can insert the frame into the doorway and secure wood chips in the corners to make sure that it is made correctly.
  7. An important point after fitting is the installation of hinges. Due to the fact that the thickness of the timber in our case is only eighteen centimeters, it will not be possible to attach the hinges with self-tapping screws. The timber may split. Therefore, you need to carefully drill holes using thin and long self-tapping screws.

  1. If desired, you can paint the frame, open it with varnish, or simply sand the surface.

How to attach a grid

Remove the frame from its hinges and place it on the floor or table. Take the mosquito net and place it on the frame. Make allowances of three centimeters on each side. The excess mesh can then be easily removed with scissors.

Bend the resulting protruding edges inside the frame and fasten them with a stapler to the frame. Attach the mesh at the same distance. Make sure that the canvas lays evenly and does not create distortions.

Now the finished mosquito door can be placed on the doorway and screwed with hinges along the pre-marked pencil mark.

Don’t forget to screw the eyelet and hook from the inside so that no one can open the door from the outside in the dark.

Now all that remains is to test the mosquito door in action.

How to make a mosquito door yourself

You can make a mosquito net for your balcony door yourself. The process is simple and does not require special skill, and self-design will save money. To do this, you will need a wooden frame and a mesh fabric, which can be purchased in a roll. The work is done this way:

  • the door frame is measured to determine the required size of the product;
  • two frames are assembled from wooden slats;
  • the corners of the products are attached diagonally using a perforated profile for drywall and self-tapping screws;
  • the mesh of the required size is prepared;
  • the mesh fabric is placed on top of one of the wooden frames and is fixed in a tense position using buttons that have a reinforced mechanism;
  • a layer of construction adhesive or liquid nails is applied to the frame around the perimeter;
  • a second frame is placed on top, which is pressed tightly against the frame with the mesh;
  • after the glue has completely dried, it is necessary to mount the hinges on one side of the product and fasten the handle on the other;
  • attach magnets to the door profile and to the structure itself;
  • hang mosquito doors on hinges attached to the outside of the opening.

A mosquito net on a plastic door or wooden structure is a multifunctional element that can protect the room from insects, poplar fluff, dust, pollen, precipitation and at the same time ensure effective free air circulation.
