Micro-ventilation at first glance seems like something awkward and has little practical meaning. But in fact, this mode of ventilation of the room can seriously change the microclimate in the room, and for the better.
A small window gap is enough for good air flow, which is especially important in winter, when windows are usually tightly closed. In winter, you don’t want to “bring” the cold into the room, but with slot ventilation this problem can be avoided, as well as some others (including the entry of litter or insects from the street into the room).
Advantages
By choosing the option of micro-ventilation, you get the following advantages:
- The window will not fog up.
- Unpleasant odors in the room will disappear.
- Heat or unpleasant odors from the street are unlikely to bother you.
- A draft will not form.
- No high humidity in the room, and, therefore, no fungi and mold, only a healthy atmosphere.
- You can leave the windows in this position, even if you go outside.
As for the last point, you don’t have to worry that the room will get too cold or overheated due to the weather outside, or that attackers will take advantage of the current situation, because the gap remains really very narrow.
Ventilation intensity control system for window sashes
So we can say with confidence: this option is one of the serious advantages, and it is really worth using. In homes where there are elderly, sick people with respiratory problems, or small children, this opportunity should be used without fail. The same goes for apartments where people smoke.
Take advantage of the additional opportunities that plastic windows provide you, and your life will become even more comfortable. Micro-ventilation will give you comfort and many other benefits.
Automatic climate ventilation devices
This type of valve is often called diffuser. The climate valve for plastic windows can be hygro-regulated, i.e. open or close the supply air depending on the humidity in the room, or is equipped with a pressure sensor and operate on its difference between the room and the outside of the building. The operating principle of the device with a humidity sensor is based on the physical property of a polyamide plate to change its length. Thanks to this, a lever attached to the plate controls the opening or closing of the throttle valve, which in turn regulates the supply of fresh air. The main negative properties that almost all automatic climate control valves have are their fairly high price and the impossibility of installation without dismantling PVC windows.
Micro-ventilation always provides fresh air in the apartment
Is additional ventilation really necessary if residential premises are initially equipped with ventilation systems? The supply and exhaust circuit already guarantees constant air exchange, the norms of which can be found independently in the SNiP documentation. Thanks to the natural impulse that underlies most ventilation systems, the air exchange rate is maintained. The multiplicity values are set out in SNiP 2.08.01-89*.
Diagram of air movement inside the apartment
It was simpler with old wooden windows: some of the air penetrated through the narrow gaps between the frames and glass, cracks in the window sills and window blocks. Plastic double-glazed windows are sealed, so air flow must be organized additionally. For this purpose, micro-ventilation systems are installed on PVC windows and balcony doors, providing the air exchange necessary for full-fledged living in the apartment.
Inlet valve matched to the frame texture
If in summer open shutters can compete with micro-ventilation devices, then at -15ºC it is unlikely that anyone will agree to open windows wide. Thus, special valves and devices provide fresh air flow, protect against condensation, do not create drafts, and do not require constant attention or maintenance. But you need to remember that for the normal operation of the supply units, proper exhaust ventilation is necessary.
The concept of microventilation and why it is needed
Microventilation is a mode in which a window is switched to, facilitating the flow of fresh air, but not creating powerful drafts. But why is this necessary?
It's all about the design of the metal-plastic window, the entire structure of which is focused on the greatest heat savings. This means that in both winter and summer, if you leave the system without attention, the situation will be the same - the full density of the home.
In terms of energy saving, especially in the cool season, this is a significant plus, but over time the following aspects may appear:
- Fogging of PVC windows.
- Condensation on the surface of the window sill and window slopes. Dampness will eventually become a prerequisite for the formation of mold and mildew.
- In the kitchen, as one of the wettest rooms, this will lead to a similar effect, only with walls and ceiling.
- Stale and stagnant air will make living in an apartment or house uncomfortable.
It is through micro-ventilation that the elimination of these unfavorable causes becomes possible. Even an insignificant influx of fresh air and the removal of “waste” air will provide a climate suitable for the body.
Device installation
Installation of vented valves is carried out in two ways. Let's consider both options to have an idea of the technology for installing devices.
For the first option
It is typical to remove the installed double-glazed window and then replace it with a new one, which is smaller in size. A valve is installed in the resulting gap between the glass unit and the frame. The process does not require drilling the plastic structure, but has some disadvantages:
- additional costs, since you will need to not only order a new double-glazed window, but also call a specialist to install it;
- reduction of glass area;
- It is problematic to install the valve yourself.
Second option
the most popular and does not require replacing double-glazed windows with new ones. Installation is quick and easy. We'll find out what the installation process looks like below.
For installation, we need the following tool:
stationery knife, ruler and screwdriver.
The valve is supplied with fastening elements and two seals 35 cm long.
One of the seals must be installed from the inside of the sash. To do this, open the window, measure 35 cm at the top of the sash and, using a utility knife, cut off the standard seal. Instead, install the seal from the kit. Opposite the cut seal, on the inside of the frame, similarly measure and cut the standard seal. We also install the seal from the kit in this place. Then, you should install three special fasteners on which the valve itself will be mounted (depending on delivery). To install the valve, you must first remove the protective film, and then glue the product to the profile. The valve mounts should press tightly against the installed plugs. Self-tapping screws secure the valve to the frame. At this point, the installation is complete and you can begin testing the device.
Seam ventilation device
This is the simplest and cheapest climate control device that can be installed either when purchasing a window or independently, without dismantling the double-glazed window. Its operating principle is as follows: Very small gaps are left in the narthex of the PVC window, through which micro-ventilation of the room occurs. It is simple in design and requires virtually no maintenance. This type of ventilation valves provides sufficient sound and dust insulation of the home. But it also has a drawback - insufficient ventilation.
Advantages and disadvantages
The following positive aspects can be mentioned when using a micro-ventilation system:
- An influx of fresh air without overcooling the room in winter.
- In summer, hot air will not penetrate into the room.
- Protection of windows from fogging, no condensation.
- No drafts.
- Long service life of the mechanism.
- Normal indoor humidity, as a result, the absence of harmful bacteria, mold and fungi.
- There is no stagnant air or unpleasant odors in the room, constant air exchange.
- Windows can be left open in micro-ventilation mode, even if the room is left for a long time.
There are practically no disadvantages to this ventilation system; the following can be identified as disadvantages:
- Dirt and dust settle on the mechanism itself installed on the window sash.
- Lack of sound insulation in such mechanisms is of low quality.
There are several standard mechanisms for implementing a micro-ventilation system:
Comb (multi-stage system). It is a small plastic strip with wavy teeth. The flap of the window is fixed using a groove in the comb. The distance formed between the sash and the frame may vary, depending on which groove is selected. The comb is installed after the windows have been installed.
This is one of the most popular micro-ventilation mechanisms because it is easy to install and use and has a number of additional advantages:
- The frame remains intact.
- Using a comb, you can control the air flow by opening the window to a distance of 30 to 60 degrees.
- Low cost. In other words, a comb is a limiter installed on the sash, which makes it possible to open the window to a selected distance.
Climate valve. This mechanism is installed on top of the window sash, just like the comb, does not violate the integrity of the frame and does not affect the sound insulation characteristics. Such a device provides a flow of fresh air into the room, and the valve membrane takes into account the difference in temperature conditions outside and inside. The climate valve can be manual or automatic; in the first version, the air flow can be regulated by the user himself, and in the second, the valves operate independently in the range from 30 to 70% relative air humidity.
The option of micro-ventilation using a climate valve is now quite popular, since air enters through the upper part of the sash without affecting the sound insulation in the room.
Special fittings, the mechanism of which is hidden in the profile. This type of device is called slot micro-ventilation. The gap for air penetration does not exceed 3 mm, this is quite enough for normal circulation of air masses. This is the only mechanism that can only be installed on casement windows, if the width of the window leaf does not exceed 5 cm. The device is built into a section of the frame near the handle, and when it is rotated 45 degrees, the sash opens slightly.
Multi-stage ventilation system. With this mechanism, a latch is placed in the tilt-and-turn system of a plastic window, with the help of which the sash can be located from the frame at a distance of 0.5 to 3.5 cm.
Micro-slit ventilation
Manufacturers of window fittings have long developed an additional device for equipping active sashes. It can be used to perform slot ventilation of interior spaces. However, many buyers still order windows as standard with a tilt-and-turn opening mechanism. The reason for this choice is lack of consumer awareness. Some of them are not even aware of the existence of such functionality, while others do not understand all the benefits of its use. But ventilating a room using such a device is much more convenient and economical.
Why is micro-slot ventilation necessary?
Tilt-and-turn fittings, which are mainly used to complete windows, do not allow maintaining a comfortable microclimate in the premises throughout the year . Additional installation of a micro-slot ventilation device allows you to:
- slow down the rate of heat exchange between rooms and the street (relevant for both cold winters and hot summers);
- reduce the amount of dust entering the premises;
- ventilate rooms at night;
- reduce street noise levels;
- reduce the amount of condensate;
- protect yourself from drafts;
- control the volume of incoming air;
- prevent slamming;
- provide ventilation in areas with high wind load.
If the active sash is switched to micro-slit ventilation mode, it is not visible from the street that the window is slightly open. This reduces the risk of hacking. This feature is relevant for private cottages, as well as apartments and offices located on the lower floors. Moreover, the mechanism itself provides additional protection for the window against burglary.
Fittings for micro-slit ventilation are recommended for equipping windows in kitchens and children's rooms. During the cooking process, it provides a continuous flow of the required volume of fresh air. This is especially important when the hood is running. In children's rooms, the device is necessary to leave the window slightly open at night without the risk of freezing the room or waking up the child with street noise.
How does micro-slit ventilation work?
The mechanism for micro-slot ventilation has a simple design. It is compatible with the fittings and is controlled using a window handle. This ventilation system consists of an analogue of the striker - a slot. This element is installed on the frame profile in the upper area of the light opening. Nothing else needs to be installed.
The slot is attached in close proximity to the strike plate, and it performs a similar function to it. However, with a slight difference. If the shape of the striker provides a tight clamp, the slot allows the sash to tilt back by 2-3 mm. This distance is enough for fresh air to begin flowing into the room. To switch the window to this ventilation mode, simply turn the knob 45 degrees.
Winter-summer switch from Siegenia
Currently, several types of devices have been developed to provide slot ventilation. Some of them duplicate the basic analogue with minor differences, while others have an individual operating principle. However, they all provide approximately the same result - tilting the sash a few millimeters.
Of interest is the development of Siegenia engineers, which is a combined device. This fitting is capable of performing the functions of a slit and a regular strike plate. The switch operates in 2 modes:
- summer – allows the active sash to be tilted by 140 mm;
- winter - limits the opening angle (the distance between the frame and the sash at the top point is 40 mm).
The location for installing the switch is selected depending on the location of the locking pin. It can be mounted on a horizontal profile at the top of the frame, or on a vertical one. To switch the switch from winter to summer mode and vice versa, just pull back and turn the cam lock.
Limiters for hinged windows
Until recently, there was a restriction - the windows had to be tilt-and-turn so that the function of slot ventilation could be added. Now the range has been supplemented with fittings for swing doors. The developed mechanism limits the angle at which they are torn off, so that casement windows can be used for winter ventilation.
Stoppers for installation outside the window
To ensure micro-ventilation, it is not necessary to supplement the fittings. The sash opening limiter can be fixed from the outside. To achieve such goals, ventilators have been developed, consisting of 2 separate elements. One of them is fixed on the frame, and the other on the sash. Together they work as a fixing arm that limits the tilt angle of the sash. The presence of a brake allows you to control the width of the gap.
What is slot ventilation and how is it achieved?
Additionally, an improved version of micro-slit ventilation has been developed. Such fittings allow you to change the distance between the frame and the active sash. It is called multi-stage or sometimes simply slotted. Moreover, the first version of the name is considered correct.
A multi-stage ventilator allows you to increase or decrease the volume of air supplied in winter mode. In the cold season, intensive ventilation is often required, when a 2 mm wide gap is not enough, and opening or tilting the sash to a wide angle provokes high heat loss. For such cases, manufacturers offer to install fittings that allow you to change the width of the gap. Its installation helps to save on heating costs and pays for itself fairly quickly.
Fittings for slot ventilation allow you to tilt the sash to a distance of 3 to 35 mm. Depending on the manufacturer and modification of the device, the minimum and maximum may vary slightly. Typically, such mechanisms provide 5-7 sash positions for slot ventilation. There are 2 main types of such systems:
- the opening angle is adjusted by a special metal comb;
- The sash tilting modes are controlled by a special angular transmission mechanism.
The operation of these systems is also subject to the action of an erroneous action blocker, thanks to which you can safely open the doors in different positions. The protection will protect you in case of incorrect rotation of the handle.
Burglary protection for slot ventilation (which functions are responsible for protection)
To ensure safety, it is not enough that the slightly open active sash is not visible from the street. The possibility of hacking cannot be ruled out even in such cases. Therefore, it is necessary to select fittings for windows that will not allow the sashes to be pressed out. Mechanisms with protection class RC2 have these qualities.
To ensure safety, special strikers have been developed that are mounted on the frame. They allow you to tilt the sash by 10 mm in micro-ventilation mode and securely hold the trunnions in special grooves and do not allow the sash to be squeezed out. That is, the presence of a small gap does not give the burglar any advantage.
Blitz tips
If you need to save money when choosing devices for micro-ventilation, then you should consider the option with a limiter. The main thing is to choose high-quality combs that have a lock in each groove. This will prevent a small child or pet from easily opening the window for ventilation.
Micro-ventilation systems in the mid-price segment are slot ventilation using internal fittings.
The most expensive option is to install an automatic valve. When choosing a climate valve, experts do not recommend saving. Designs of unknown and untested brands are often made from low-quality materials that may not withstand winter temperature changes and become deformed.
Basic methods of organizing micro-ventilation
Installation of the limiter comb
The mechanism of the device is very simple, the principle of operation is intuitive. Inexpensive “combs” are available in most hardware stores and from companies that produce and install PVC windows. Self-installation does not require special skills.
The device, depending on the design, is mounted at the bottom at the angle of the sash or in the area of its handle. This method of micro-ventilation is multi-stage - the size of the supply gap between the sash and the frame is regulated by fixing the protruding pin in a certain groove of the comb.
Disadvantages of this ventilation method: fragility of plastic parts; reduction in the sound insulation properties of a slightly open window; increased dust content of seals, which will require additional care.
Slot ventilation
Thanks to special fittings, the flap forms a ventilation gap of several millimeters at the top. Its value depends on the handle fixed at a certain angle (between horizontal and vertical positions).
With this method of ventilation, as with the installation of a comb, additional care for the material of the seals and the mandatory seasonal installation of a mosquito net will be required.
Important! Experts know how to make micro-ventilation on plastic windows without compromising their other functional characteristics. It is advisable to use the services of professionals when installing and adjusting fittings for slot and valve ventilation
Knob rotation diagram for micro-ventilation
Installation of climate valves
In the upper part of the window, to the width of the supply valve, the seal is removed from the influx groove of the sash and window frame. A valve is installed at this location. If micro-ventilation of plastic windows is planned at the ordering stage, the ventilation valve can be built into the profile during the manufacture of the structure. The ventilation mechanism can have automatic and mechanical (manual) control, which allows you to calibrate the volume of air passed through. Installing a valve protects the room from insects, noise, and dust.
Note! For previously installed window systems, purchase a removable model of the supply valve. The fixed option requires factory conditions and is installed during the window manufacturing process
Creating a cozy microclimate and taking care of the health of the family, a micro-ventilation system in plastic windows is increasingly becoming mandatory for installation. The presence of this system even in budget models of window structures today is the norm among progressive manufacturers.

What is micro-ventilation of windows and why is it necessary?
Micro-ventilation is the flow of air from the street through a window with the sash completely or almost completely closed. That is, the plastic window is closed, but there may be little air flow.
The purpose of such ventilation is:
- Provide a supply of fresh air for human breathing. Even through a small gap, about 10-40 m³/h can pass (for reference: according to sanitary standards, an influx of 30 m³/h for breathing must be provided for 1 adult).
- Avoid increasing humidity.
With the windows closed, the humidity in the room will increase due to human breathing, laundry being dried, and food being prepared in the kitchen. You can tell that there is such a problem by sweating windows.
Fresh outside air will reduce humidity levels. Thanks to this, mold can be prevented.
Is micro-ventilation necessary?
For PVC windows, microventilation is necessary if, when the window is closed, you notice the following problems:
- It’s harder to breathe in the room: the air becomes stale;
- Mold appears in the room, and it is impossible to remove it completely;
- windows sweat: in cold weather, moisture accumulates on the glass, frame, sash, slopes, window sill;
- clothes and bedding in the apartment are damp for no reason;
- Things take a long time to dry after washing (if they are dried in an apartment).
Instead of window micro-ventilation, you can install:
Why micro-ventilation is useful: the benefits
Micro-slit ventilation is useful both in winter and in warm weather.
In winter (or autumn-spring) you hardly want to ventilate the room by simply opening a window or vent: it’s cold outside. This can be done, but only occasionally, and not for a long time (for example, during cleaning).
Microventilation is good at any time of the year, because windows do not need to be opened. Thereby:
- less street noise is heard;
- poplar fluff and insects do not penetrate;
- Precipitation does not fall.
Features of plastic double-glazed windows
PVC windows have a number of undeniable advantages:
- have reliable mechanisms;
- safe for health;
- retain heat;
- have a long service life;
- you can choose different configurations;
- production according to individual sizes;
- ease of care;
- excellent sound insulation;
- complete tightness.
Let's look at why the problem of fresh air in the apartment is acute for those who have recently replaced old wooden frames with plastic windows.
The fact is that there were always cracks in the old window blocks, and wood itself is a breathable material, which ensured a round-the-clock air flow from the street.
Those who have already installed modern window systems often note that the rooms are stuffy, and with high humidity, condensation forms on the glass. Thus, the main advantage - tightness - results in the disruption of air circulation.
To solve this problem, you can constantly keep the windows open and ventilate the room. But this can be inconvenient for a number of reasons:
- in winter you don’t want to cool the room too much;
- constant drafts can lead to the development of colds;
- the summer heat penetrates the room;
- the sash is not fixed and may flap due to gusts of wind;
- You must remember to open the frames at least twice a day.
It is much more convenient to install one of the microventilation systems on your plastic windows once. After this, the problem of stuffiness can be forgotten forever.
What is microventilation in plastic windows? It provides constant access of fresh air to the apartment without drafts and excessive cooling of the room and is carried out by installing various micro-ventilation mechanisms.
Microventilation is necessary to provide constant fresh air into the room without drafts
What is micro-ventilation mode in a plastic window?
The micro-ventilation mode implies ensuring a minimum (micro-slit) natural air flow into the room. To implement this mode, the window is opened slightly, which creates a small gap between the sash and the frame, literally a few millimeters.
The ventilation created in this way is quite sufficient to maintain a normal microclimate in the serviced room. Naturally, for such purposes you should use plastic windows that have the function of adjusting the position of the window.
Comb for micro-ventilation of windows
The good thing about this ventilation mechanism is that there is no need to install an additional mesh on the PVC windows to protect against street litter. It is enough to correctly adjust the size of the gap and street debris, insects or precipitation will not enter the room even with strong gusts of wind.
Do all double-glazed windows have it?
Changing the position of the window in several variations is a function inherent in modern “Euro” plastic windows. Modern plastic solutions have the ability to open at different angles (the handle allows you to adjust the position of the window).
Such functions are usually not available for old windows, although slot ventilation can be created there, but not so effective (and street debris will enter the room). But there is no need to rush to install a plastic window - even such solutions do not always have a micro-ventilation mode.
Mode purpose
The micro-ventilation mode is used to implement several possibilities at once, that is, it is multifunctional. Let's start with the fact that it organizes an acceptable air flow for most cases, capable of maintaining an optimal microclimate in the room being served.
Moreover, the organization of adequate air flow is possible without opening the window. And here another advantage is noticeable - natural air flow can be achieved even in the winter season, when opening the window is completely impossible or problematic (due to the cold).
The use of this mode also allows you to protect the structure from fogging and, as a result, condensation. Condensation is fraught with wear and tear on window materials, and is also the main cause of mold and pathogenic fungi.
Sash opening angle for micro-ventilation
In addition, a completely closed window without pre-installed supply valves is not only a high risk of condensation. The room being serviced will simply be always stuffy, the air will “stagnate”, and thanks to micro-ventilation this can be avoided.
Advantages
There are several main advantages of this method of ventilating a room, including the main one - cost savings (installing special valves will be more expensive).
List of other benefits:
- the ability to organize optimal air flow without loosening the fittings, for which you just need to turn the handle;
- in winter, the air flow weakens, but it is enough to prevent fogging and the appearance of condensation on the windowsill with all the consequences (fungus, mold);
- preventing the appearance of mold and fungi not only on the windowsill, but also directly on the window and in the room served;
- if the room being served is small, or it is a balcony/loggia, then in most cases there is no need to install an additional supply valve at all.
How to provide micro-ventilation using a comb
Installing a comb allows you to fix the position of the sash in the slightly open state. Most often, there are multi-stage limiters that provide handle rotation at a slope of 30, 45 and 60 degrees.
The comb is screwed to the frame, and a restrictive element is installed on the sash. Thus, the window can be fixed to a gap of 0.3–5 cm. Installation of the comb can be done by any person if he has a screwdriver. For convenience, you can use a drill, but its requirement is not necessary.
Detailed algorithm for installing the comb on a plastic window:
- First, release the bolts on the window handle by carefully turning the decorative plastic plug 90 degrees clockwise. Manufacturers provide special recesses for this.
- Unscrew the bolts and remove the handle.
We place the restrictive element from the comb in this place, return the handle on top and tighten the bolts. - Next, you need to screw the comb itself to the frame with two screws.
To make the task easier, the holes can be prepared with a drill.
Tip: in order to place the comb in the right place, before drilling, attach the mechanism to the window and make marks with a pencil.
The main advantages of the comb are its low price and ease of installation with your own hands. However, there are incomparably more disadvantages:
- There is a risk of deforming the profile due to weakening of the structure with holes for self-tapping screws. If the profiles turn out to be of poor quality, the tightness of the sashes can even be compromised.
- Slight deterioration in the thermal insulation and sound insulation properties of the profile, as its integrity is compromised.
- Even with the smallest available gap, the gap area is large enough, so the room can cool quite quickly in severe frosts.
Step-by-step instruction
Installation of the comb mechanism
In plastic windows, the handle can usually only be in three positions: horizontal (the window is fully open), vertical up (ventilation mode) and vertical down (window closed). If a comb is installed on the window frame, intermediate handle positions will appear.
You can purchase a comb at any specialized store and install it on the window yourself as follows:
- Rotate the trim on the window handle 90 degrees, unscrew the screws that secure it to the window and remove it.
- Attach the rod that performs the fixing function to the mounting location, and screw the handle to the same place.
- Place the comb on the window, taking into account the position of the rod, and mark the places where it will be fixed.
- Screw the comb to the window frame using self-tapping screws.
This is the easiest way to install micro-ventilation on a window.
Basic recommendations
The room must be ventilated 4 times a day for 15 minutes. Otherwise, the following ventilation of plastic windows is carried out:
- slot micro-ventilation, which involves installing a special mechanism in the profile of the structure, the size of the gap is 2-3 mm;
- comb or multi-stage micro-ventilation, which consists of installing different slots; such technology is not used in a folding system;
- valve (mounted at the top of the window).
Installing a comb is considered the cheapest method of ventilating a house. Installation work is carried out on the window profile. The comb is made of plastic. The technology in question has 2 disadvantages:
- Deterioration of heat and sound insulation.
- Fragility of the structure.
Scheme of rotating the handle for micro-ventilation.
Slot micro-ventilation of plastic windows involves installing the system into a window profile (during production). Among the disadvantages of this technology, experts highlight the formation of a gap (between the sash and the frame), through which dirt and dust will enter the room. A plastic window can be provided with fresh ventilation. The mechanism used to supply the home with oxygen is easy to use and highly efficient.
A valve is mounted in the upper part of the swing flap. It ensures constant circulation of air masses in the house. When installing the mechanism in question, the soundproofing and heat-insulating properties of plastic windows do not change. The valve is self-regulated, but it is not designed to operate under significant temperature fluctuations. Therefore, build-ups of ice and snow form in the structure, disrupting the operation of the mechanism and the thermal insulation of the house.
Benefits of ventilation
The ventilation system provided in a plastic window has the following advantages:
- preventing hot air from entering the house on hot days;
- reliable protection from drafts;
- air hygiene support;
- ensuring constant air exchange in the house;
- preventing hypothermia in the children's room;
- protection against condensation on window sills;
- long service life of the mechanism;
- Possibility to fix the window sash.
Scheme of air movement during micro-ventilation.
You can install such micro-ventilation with the help of professionals. Upon completion of installation work, specialists provide instructions. If you turn the window frame handle 45° and pull it towards you, then a gap of 1-3 mm will appear (after a click). The system installation was successful. Some mechanisms are mounted in the sash profile. In this case, micro-ventilation is activated when the handle is turned down 135°.
Adjustment of such a system is carried out with the help of professionals. Otherwise you will need a Torx screwdriver. The mechanism is adjusted in two places (upper and lower loop). First check the diagonals against sagging. The indicator from the bottom element should be longer (0-3 mm) than from the top loop.

Methods of organization
You can organize slot ventilation in 4 ways:
- Installation of the comb (accessories must be purchased and installed separately).
- Installation of a window valve (accessories, purchased and installed separately).
- Through the slot ventilation mode on plastic windows (if it is provided, you don’t have to buy or install anything).
- Through holes in the window profile.
Below we will look at each option in more detail.
Comb (+do-it-yourself installation video)
Comb (opening limiter, latch) - a bar with recesses, which is attached between the frame and the handle on the sash. This device prevents the sash from opening or closing, fixing it at the selected distance.
The regulation is stepwise (most often three-stage or four-stage). That is, the owner can adjust the degree of opening of the frame.
Basic information:
- How much does it cost: 150-300 rubles.
- How much air will it let through: enough for 1-3 people to breathe, even at the very first division (when the flap is minimally open).
- When to choose: The device should be used if there is no slot ventilation mode, and you cannot install the valve yourself, and you do not want to pay specialists.
You can read more about (types, manufacturers, prices, installation methods) separately.
Window valve (+video with operating principle)
A window valve is a flat housing with a hole and a noise filter that cuts into the frame. Through the valve, air can freely flow from the street into the apartment in a natural way.
If, during micro-ventilation and the use of a comb, the sash opens (even if only a little), then the valve provides inflow when the window is completely closed. Some models can be adjusted - they have a regulator to change the cross-section of the hole. That is, the valve can be closed completely or closed (relevant in winter, in severe frosts).
Basic information:
- How much does it cost: from 1000 rubles.
- How much air will pass through: on average 10-40 m³/h
- When to choose: if you want to maintain maximum noise insulation (for example, if there is a busy road under the windows).
You can read more about (manufacturers, prices, installation method) separately.
Window with slot ventilation (+video)
The most successful option is if micro-slit ventilation is provided in the window.
If you are going to change windows, you should ask the seller about this mechanism. If the windows are already installed, you can check whether they have such a function. To do this, you need to turn the handle 45 º. If it turns and locks in this position, there is a micro-ventilation mode.
In this mode, the window does not close completely: a small (3-5 mm) gap remains between the frame and the sash, through which air gets inside.
Basic information:
- How much does it cost: if your windows have this mode - not at all. If you buy a new window, fittings with micro-ventilation will cost 1000-2000 extra rubles over the “regular” cost.
- How much air will it let through: a gap 3-5 mm wide can let through an average of about 30-50 m³/h. The figures are very approximate and depend on the height of the frame and the power of exhaust ventilation.
- When to choose: if you are going to change windows.
Among the main advantages of this function are:
- Constant air exchange in the rooms, even in adverse weather conditions.
Sub-zero temperatures or strong winds do not allow residents to open windows without discomfort, even for a few minutes. The ventilation function will ensure air flow without drafts. - Fighting condensation.
Micro-ventilation is indispensable in double-glazed windows in the kitchen. Intensive use of a multicooker, stove or oven leads to the formation of steam in the air and condensation on surfaces. Without continuous ventilation, water droplets can become a fertile environment for mold growth. - Air hygiene.
The flow of fresh air into the room allows you to reduce the concentration of harmful microorganisms and pathogenic bacteria. - Preservation of heat in the house in winter.
According to experts’ measurements, window micro-ventilation has an average intensity of no more than 12–15 cubic meters. meters per hour. This has virtually no effect on the temperature in the house; in a few hours it can drop by only half a degree.
What to consider when purchasing
If you plan to install a microventilator, you should carefully select it. This makes it easier and faster to deploy overhead options. And built-in devices are the least noticeable. They are valuable from a design point of view.
In addition, other factors are important, for example:
- if the installation is equipped with automatic control, maintaining a comfortable balance of humidity and temperature in the room does not require human intervention;
- climate valves must have thermal insulation, dust filters, and if there is metal in the structure, a special coating that insulates cold surfaces;
- high-quality valves are also equipped with sound insulation;
- the presence of mosquito nets in the inlet valve is welcome;
- Special fittings are installed for casement windows.
The technical characteristics of the device should also be a guideline when purchasing. In other words, the throughput provided by ventilation. This indicator depends on the cross-section of the hole in the body of the device through which air enters and the pressure difference between the street and the room. The normal indicator is an air flow of 20 - 30 m3/hour with a difference of 10 Pa. To make sure that the purchased device is within the acceptable limits, it is important to carefully study the documentation or ask a question to a sales consultant.
Regarding sound insulation. The noise level created by ventilation is considered comfortable at 30 - 35 dB with the inlet completely open. The numbers correspond to the standard sound pressure in the apartment.
Limiter Multivent
This device has two functions at once. Firstly, the limiter always ensures an equal gap between the frame and the sash of no more than 4-5 cm in any position, and secondly, without a special key it is impossible to open and close the window, which makes Multivent an excellent guarantor of safety. Moreover, the limiter will protect the room both from outside penetration and from all its inhabitants from accidentally opening a window from the inside, which is especially important in schools, hospitals and kindergartens.
Whatever micro-ventilation system you choose, it will have a number of advantages:
- Regulating the amount of fresh air in the room and its humidity level,
- Easy to use,
- No costs for expensive ventilation systems,
- Ease of installation,
- Maintaining a healthy microclimate,
- No condensation on windows,
- No drafts,
- Inconspicuous design
- Low price.
Winter ventilation of plastic windows is necessary in the following cases:
- There is an exhaust hood in the room,
- There are people in the house who are prone to colds,
- The humidity level in the room must be controlled.
Necessary accessories
To install the mechanism, you may need the following elements, depending on the selected type of micro-ventilation:
- A special valve with movable membranes inside allows you to control the level of air penetration into the room.
- A comb, which is a small plastic hook with three rounded notches.
- A collapsible brake, consisting of two parts that are attached to the sash and frame, it blocks the opening angle.
- Angular gear, a mechanism that blocks the folding and turning position of the sash; it is similar to a comb, but has a larger number of grooves.
Ventilation and plastic: compatible or not
Why haven’t they yet come up with a way to effectively ventilate windows in the modern world? Here we need to be more aware of the issue of ventilation in houses. Here everything was based on the presence of a hood in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as ventilation through the door and window slits. This technique was invented a long time ago and has already met the expectations of the inventors.
And now you can look at this invention from the perspective of arranging new plastic windows. When the structure goes through the installation process, all cracks and gaps are sealed, thereby creating humidity in the room. This disrupts natural air exchange due to air not entering the room. The indoors of a house or apartment becomes stuffy, humid and discomfort begins. Here a process can begin, which will consist of the following: all the air will not leave the room, but will remain there constantly, and also all the smells from the neighboring apartments will be felt completely by you.
Here we can highlight other problems that arise during operation. Due to the constant closing of windows, condensation may form inside the structure, which will prevent the normal use of materials. It is best to keep the windows on the micro-ventilation function to prevent the glass from fogging up.
Plastic window ventilation mode
Of course, you can get rid of such problems with simple ventilation using several built-in modes. Also, when purchasing, you should consider the number of cameras. If there is a cold temperature, it is better to buy multi-chamber windows, which will retain heat much better. Of course, you will have to overpay for quality, but the result will not keep you waiting.
Window valve versus other ventilation systems: which is better?
To compare types of supply ventilation, it is first worth defining the comparison criteria:
- Performance.
The performance of the ventilator is measured in cubic meters of air supplied by the device per hour. On average, an adult consumes about 30–40 m3/h. So, if your family has three people, you will need a device with a productivity of 90 cubic meters per hour. It is best to take a ventilator with a performance reserve so as not to overload the device with constant operation at maximum settings. - Noise.
For comfortable use of the ventilator, a low noise level is important. An unnoticeable noise level is in the range of 30–40 decibels; at high performance, the normal noise level of the ventilator should be no more than 50–55 decibels. Also, when choosing a device, you need to monitor what sound comes from the ventilator: intermittent noise will most likely irritate your ears. - Filtration system.
Air filters are not installed in every ventilator. If you want the air supplied to your apartment to be not only fresh, but also clean, the presence of a filtration system should be a decisive criterion for you. - Air heating system.
Air heating is a necessary function for residents of cities where winter is especially harsh. Using the heating system, you can program the device to supply air at a comfortable temperature. - Difficult to install.
Ventilator installation is a process that requires care and precision. Some types of ventilators are installed by yourself, while others require the help of specialists. - Price.
The price of a ventilator depends on the factors mentioned above - maximum performance, sound insulation, quantity and quality of filters, availability of a climate control system, etc. Thus, the cost can vary from several hundred rubles to tens of thousands.
Combining ventilation and windows
Is it possible to combine ventilation and windows? The answer is simple - you can. There are quite a few options for the device. There are quite a few combinations, some of which are:
- with a window;
- with self-ventilation;
- with comb;
- with ventilation valve;
Drilling a hole to install the ventilation valve
Ventilation valve on the room side
And from the street side
Windows with a window
A fairly common method of ventilation, which has been used for quite a long time. It provides for the supply of air under the ceiling in the room, which is then mixed with room air, thereby forming a cool and clean product. This prevents the appearance of drafts or condensation in the window.
The disadvantages of this design are the rather high cost and complexity of the design, which increases the weight of the materials. It is worth noting here that when the design becomes more complex, a large amount of light flux is lost, which makes the room quite dark. This isn't always a good thing.
Plastic windows with self-ventilation
Self-ventilated windows are the best option for installation in all buildings. They can find application in both civil and industrial construction. This option consists in the fact that the designs use profiles with holes at the top and bottom of the frame. The holes are located in the upper inner and lower outer parts. Air masses passing through the lower part are heated, and already heated air enters the room.
The principle works very well, but has some limitations. Such structures cannot be installed on upper floors due to insufficient air supply. Due to this deficiency in many systems, ventilation valves for windows have recently become widespread.
Windows with combs
These windows are the most widespread today. With this device, the windows have a built-in regulator that allows you to either open the window completely or open it in several modes.
This mechanism is very inexpensive, but gives quite good results. The comb makes it possible to regulate all incoming masses and leave the window in an intermediate position mode.
Supply valve for microventilation
This device is installed on the sash frame and does not affect its performance at all.
There are several types of devices differing in various characteristics:
- According to the installation method - with insertion into the window frame, and expensive.
- By type of control - manual and automatic.

There is also a supply ventilation valve integrated into the sash handle. It does not interfere with the appearance of the double-glazed window, and is fully capable of providing access to the freshest air into the room.
When ordering and installing new plastic or modern wood windows, you should keep ventilation in mind. Any room must have at least one tilt-and-turn double-glazed window. In addition, it is worth taking care of devices for arranging micro-ventilation.
