Bathroom door dimensions: standard, width and height

Before purchasing doors for a bathroom, you need to pay attention to the fact that the opening in the bathroom can be smaller than in other rooms. The dimensions of doors to the bathroom and toilet differ in width from interior doors, because sanitary premises have a number of features that should be taken into account.

After purchasing doors for the entire apartment without calculating the size of the door leaf, the buyer will be disappointed. You should measure the openings and pay attention to the material from which the panel is made so that the product does not become unusable ahead of schedule.

Doors to the bathroom and toilet - dimensions.

It is recommended to take measurements before determining the size you need. In the figure below you can see exactly what measurements we are talking about.

Calculation of the required size of bathroom doors.

If the dimensions are chosen incorrectly, it will then be impossible to file it down or adjust it to the required dimensions. All measurements should be taken correctly - from one brickwork to another, but not from the box. It is imperative to take into account that the masonry can be covered with plaster, then the parameters of the opening will have slight differences.

According to the table below, you can find out the general standard size of bathroom and toilet doors:

Door dimensions (width and height)Opening widthOpening height
55x190From 59 to 65From 195 to 200
60x190From 64 to 70From 195 to 200
60x200From 64 to 70From 205 to 210

Color of door blocks for ease of orientation

This marking makes it easier for people who are visually impaired or have cognitive limitations to identify the door opening.

Marking is carried out in accordance with the width of the door opening and the opening distance of the leaf using a color that contrasts with the floor covering.

Identification of a plumbing facility through a tactile-sound effect facilitates operation for blind people and people with cognitive disabilities, and a modern visual-acoustic display system is relevant for the deaf and blind. An additional feature is the use of such devices for the purpose of warning about emergency situations, including evacuation.

How to independently calculate the required size of bathroom doors.

Of course, in typical Soviet buildings, the standard dimensions of bathroom doors are 600x2000 mm, in new buildings - 700x2000 mm. But you cannot be sure of their accuracy. If you are not the first tenant in the apartment, perhaps the previous owner reconstructed the opening for some reason.

Before starting installation, you need to take the dimensions of the opening:

  • The height of the opening is measured starting from the floor and up to its ceiling;
  • The width of the opening is measured from wall to wall;
  • Measure the thickness of the wall (depth of the opening) in a similar way, taking into account the future finishing on both sides of the wall.

Once you have measured the opening, you can begin to calculate the appropriate size of the door itself for the bathroom and toilet.

This is done by subtracting the following quantities:

  1. The distance between the wall and the box is 10-15 mm;
  2. Box beam 25 mm thick;
  3. The distance between the box and the panel is 3 mm;
  4. The distance between the bottom edge of the box and the threshold is 10 mm.

Advice! For an opening measuring 680-700x2050-2100 mm, the following figures come out: the door width is 60 cm and the height is 2 m.

How to take measurements of an opening

Standard doors for bathrooms and toilets in Soviet standard buildings are 600 mm wide and 2000 mm high, the size of the doors in new buildings is 700 mm and 2000 mm, respectively. You should not rely on these figures: despite existing standards, since there is no guarantee that the openings comply with these standards.

Before purchasing a canvas, you will need to take measurements, having previously dismantled the canvas and the box. First, determine the dimensions of the opening, then the sash. Use a ruler or tape to measure thickness, width and height. If the bathroom has a double-leaf design, then measure each half.

The height of the wall opening is measured from the floor to the top beam. The next parameter is the width of the opening. If the measurement is carried out correctly, then the dimensions of the opening to the bathroom are approximately 5 cm larger than the width and height of the canvas. If this indicator has a different meaning, it is better to calculate the dimensions of the sash.

How to calculate canvas sizes

If during the measurement it turned out that the previously installed canvas did not correspond to the parameters of the opening, then a calculation will be required. It is necessary to take into account some parameters to determine the exact size of the bathroom door.

The gap between the wall and the box will be about 10 mm, and its thickness will be approximately 25 mm. A distance of 3 mm is maintained between the frame and the sash on the right and left. To prevent the panel from clinging to the floor, leave 10 mm at the bottom. Calculations are made so that the sash opens easily and does not rub against the frame. The sum of all gaps on each side is subtracted from the opening parameters. As a result, the dimensions of the panel will remain, which will fit well into the hole.

Execution Features

In order to find out the size of the bathroom doors, you need to correctly measure the opening. It is advisable that the ruler be leveled vertically when measuring height, and horizontally when determining width. If the room has a rough finish, take into account that during cladding the parameters of the opening may change downwards.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is calculating the canvas without taking into account gaps.

If such a structure can be installed, the doors will not open or will move slowly. Another mistake is to use a standard size fabric for an opening that does not meet these parameters. Installation work may take more time and financial resources.

To avoid a situation where the panel does not fit into the hole in the wall, you should measure the width and height at several points, and not at one. This way you can determine whether there is a distortion in the arch.

Common mistakes

Typical mistakes when calculating door leaf sizes:

  1. Installing a sealed door in the bathroom. Do not leave a 1 cm gap between the canvas and the floor covering to ensure natural ventilation.
  2. The calculation is made without taking into account the necessary clearances for installation and opening. Do not forget about the need to leave 3 mm between the leaf and the frame so that the door can open freely.
  3. Determining the size of the opening at one point. The door arch may be uneven.
  4. The calculations do not take into account the thickness of the plaster layer.
  5. The installed door swings open, blocking the passage through the corridor or hitting equipment. Before installation, you should consider which way it will open.

When measuring, measurements must be taken at several points; be sure to leave a gap between the canvas and the floor.

What is the standard size of bathroom doors?

Today, general standards have been adopted regulating the sizes of interior openings and entrance doors to the bathroom, respectively. Modern manufacturers must comply with accepted standards, so all products have the same dimensions. The door frame has a height of 2 m.

The standard width parameters are slightly different and can be the following sizes:

  • 100;
  • 40 cm.
  • >60;>70;>80;>90;

Housing built according to earlier designs, for example, houses built in Soviet times, have their own characteristics. Thus, Khrushchev-type apartments have an opening width of 60 cm, and new buildings are narrower - 70 or 80 cm.

Conclusions

The above calculations give an idea of the minimum gaps and dimensions of the door leaf. In practice, if you have a wide doorway, it is better to make the gaps a little larger: 35-45 mm on both sides when calculating the width, 50-80 mm when calculating the height of the leaf when installing doors without a threshold, and 70-90 mm when installing with a threshold.

Marking

Standard formats for traditional tactile markers are represented by D-2.5 cm marking cones arranged in a linear pattern. In the area of the door handle, maintaining a height of one and a half meters, you can install markers made in the form of tactile diagrams for installing sanitary-hygienic equipment.

Door handles for disabled people

Marking with the “Exit” pictogram should be done only by contrast at a standard height of 120-160 cm, which makes it easy to identify the location of the doorway for visually impaired persons and people with cognitive limitations.

Marking with separate tactile indicators or special tactile tiles is allowed, and the material in this case can be stainless steel, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane.

The problem of atypical layouts

If it is not possible to install a standard door option, the problem can be solved in one of the following ways:

  1. Order a non-standard option according to the proposed calculation. A custom door will cost about a quarter more.
  2. Expand or reduce the opening. It should be taken into account that the box must be firmly fixed, so options for sealing the arch with improvised material may not last long. And expanding the entrance is not always possible, for example, with existing tiled walls.
  3. Change the dimensions of the door slightly. This can best be done by installing standard wood blocks using a circular saw. The cutting areas must be treated with varnish. Metal and plastic doors cannot be reduced without special equipment and loss of properties.

The dimensions of hollow doors, as well as those made of MDF, cannot be changed either.

Which bathroom doors are best?

The bathroom is a unique room; most often, unfortunately, it is not very large, but it is important in every apartment and house. Therefore, when choosing which door is better for the bathroom, you should pay attention to solutions that combine aesthetics and functionality.

The bathroom door should be beautifully designed and match the decor of the apartment. It must also be easy to use, durable and meet certain requirements.

Until recently, this door was almost the same everywhere, sometimes with a window at the top and ventilation holes at the bottom. Those days are thankfully behind us. Currently, the choice is quite large, we can choose different models - glass with different amounts of glazing, solid wood, veneered, MDF and others. Which door to put in the bathroom depends on our tastes and preferences.

The glass option is an interesting and common solution. In addition, this will additionally allow us to illuminate a room without windows. If you are concerned about privacy in the bathroom, you may want to consider options that use clear glass in moderation. In this case, you should choose options with matte or patterned glazing, that is, not completely transparent.

Quite often chosen for the bathroom. This traditional solution has its advantages:

  • ensures maximum confidentiality;
  • allows the use of additional surface, for example, for hanger hooks or other accessories.

Currently, manufacturers often offer collections that include bathroom doors. Thanks to this, we can use the same style throughout the entire house or apartment; the differences will only be in the details, for example, in size or degree of glazing.

Selection by material

You will be surprised again, but doors for bathrooms are also successfully made from solid wood, in particular oak and beech. To begin with, the wood is dried naturally and vacuum, which increases its resistance to deformation. And then it is covered with a protective coating of varnish. This design will last for many years.

To save money, you can use laminated pine, which is lined with a thin layer of MDF and covered with PVC film.

Veneered products are the most popular today; they are quite suitable for bathrooms. It is also possible to use plastic doors; when properly processed, they have high moisture-proof properties.

Apartment owners who are faced with renovations for the first time often have a mistaken opinion about what the size of a door to a bathroom or toilet should be, and may purchase the wrong product. The most common mistakes: buying the same doors for all openings or buying doors of a standard size, which supposedly must fit the opening of a bathroom or toilet in any home.

Our article is intended to protect beginners from such mistakes, as well as tell us about the commercially available options and features of selecting the right size doors.

Opening option - right or left, which should I choose?

  • Right - in this case, the hinges are located on the right side and the door opens counterclockwise.
  • Left - the hinges are installed in the frame on the left side and the door opens clockwise.

Before choosing an opening option, let's see which solution will work best for our apartment or house.
Make sure the door is sized to open freely and not block passage.

In the bathroom, pay attention to how the cabinet doors open and which side the switches are on.

If the area is very small and a standard size door cannot fit, you can install folding or sliding doors that do not take up much space.

For safety reasons, they must open outward and have ventilation holes (the shape can be any - it can be a grill, holes or a gap, you can simply trim the bottom).

This is very important - in a bathroom without proper ventilation, the mirror fogs up and fogs up, and this is perhaps the smallest problem. Poor ventilation can lead to the development of fungus and mold.

SNIP STANDARDS

According to the building codes and regulations (SNiP) “Fire safety of buildings and structures” dated January 21, 1997, doors at emergency exits and on evacuation routes must open towards the exit from the building. In all other cases, the direction for opening is not regulated, since there are no standards. Below is a list of them:

  • apartment buildings;
  • private houses;
  • premises in which no more than 15 people can be present at the same time;
  • storage rooms with an area of no more than 200 m²;
  • bathrooms;
  • external walls of buildings located on the northern side of the climate zone.

However, there is still a general recommendation. Whatever direction the interior door opens, its location should not interfere with the evacuation of people in case of an emergency.

Also, the SNiP document dated January 21, 1997 states that at the design stage of a building it is necessary to position the doors in such a way that when they open simultaneously, they should not block each other. That is why there are situations when in the same room the doors, although they open in one direction, but from different hands.

Installation nuances

According to GOST, modern houses must have a certain height and width of the door frame. These requirements are taken into account by manufacturers of entrance doors to bathrooms and toilets. However, there are times when the parameters initially do not meet the requirements or you need to correct them yourself.

Door block

Adviсe:

  1. Openings of 60 and 70 cm are considered standard parameters, but 80–90 cm is no longer a standard.
  2. The height of 2 m for a shower room is practically unchanged. It is changed only in exceptional cases, for example, for an original designer interior or installation of metal structures for decoration.
  3. In practice, it often happens that the actual width, or less often the height, is several millimeters larger than the standard dimensions. Usually the reason is the use of a finishing material that increases the size of the canvas. Why is it possible to expand the opening to the bathroom and toilet, otherwise the front door will not fit in width or height. However, there are cases when this is not always possible, for example, tiling walls.
  4. You shouldn't destroy your own home over small details. The way out of this situation may be as follows. You can leave the cladding, and reduce the interior opening to the bathroom and toilet to standard sizes. Then the width and height will remain at the proper level, and there will be no problems with installing plumbing fixtures or other metal products. To do this, you will need to make certain calculations for the front door. All this must be done before purchasing the ceiling, i.e. take careful measurements

  1. In addition, individual cases show that the height can vary by up to 1 cm, not to mention the width. To adjust the necessary parameters, sometimes you just need to cut off the excess. Before doing this, it is best to find out the composition, structure, and properties of the door. For example, cutting products made from MDF or so-called voids is prohibited.
  2. Metal models for the home cannot be shortened without special equipment, and installing plastic doors in the bathroom and toilet may require some skill. After all, by cutting off a little of the coating, the product loses some of its functions - you need to be very careful with this!
  3. Without a protective layer, metal, plastic, wood and other doors become vulnerable to moisture. This leads to deformation of the product, i.e. its failure.

Installing a door trim

  1. Reducing the height and width is easiest for wooden openings of standard sizes, more difficult for metal ones.
  2. Standard dimensions of 60 cm when operating a door in a house have the same properties as an opening of 80 cm.
  3. Wood is rightfully considered a malleable material, however, it also requires certain skills. It is necessary to cut off a few millimeters along the edges of the structure, and then treat them with protective agents, i.e. antiseptics, putty, and special varnish.

Wooden door installation

  1. To install a standard wood opening in your home, it is best to use a circular saw. If you saw off with a jigsaw, you definitely won’t get a straight edge; you’ll have to level, trim, and putty the opening. However, the saw requires certain skills when using it.

SanPin for public toilets

The sanitary rules for the design and maintenance of public latrines and their equipment are set out in detail in document SanPin No. 983-72 of 1972.

For places with large pedestrian traffic and large flows of people, an approximate calculation of the capacity of restrooms is 1 toilet or 2 urinals per 500 people. The service radius is about 500-700 meters. SanPin of public restrooms requires that places and approaches to them be marked with appropriate signs and indicators. The location must be agreed with the sanitary authorities.

According to SanPin, the size of the toilet must be at least 2.75 m2. At least 2.5 m2 must be allocated for each toilet, and the height of the partition between the stalls must be at least 1.25 m.

According to SanPin, the toilet room must be fenced, have an entrance vestibule, ventilation, be well heated and lit, must have washbasins, sinks (with a separate airlock) and a separate entrance, and be isolated from the staircases. The floor is made of easily washable materials, non-slippery, the walls are sound/waterproof. Toilet stalls should always have toilet paper, a coat hook, and waste bins available. An electric dryer or paper towel and soap should always be in a public restroom. The public toilet provides cabins with plumbing equipment for children and the disabled. The area around a public toilet should be paved and landscaped. The staff is provided with all the necessary work equipment to maintain cleanliness and order.

Cleaning the base and monitoring the condition

This will solve two problems:

  • Plan further work. For example, even if strengthening the opening around the perimeter is not required, it is more than advisable to treat its end parts with the same antiseptic. Especially if you plan to install a door block made of wood.
  • Take accurate measurements. This will allow you to determine the optimal size of the door to the toilet (bathroom). Then it will become clear what is better: to purchase a model in a furniture showroom or to order it from a specialized company, according to your own drawing.

Correct installation

Before choosing and ordering, you should correctly measure the opening in the wall. The measurements must be carried out by professionals who will take into account all the nuances, calculate the size of the box and trim, taking into account the location of switches and sockets. An important factor is the thickness of the ceramic tiles, so the installation of doors should be carried out at the final stage of the renovation, when the floor is already ready. If the height of the tiles is less than the height of the doors, the walls around the opening must be leveled using sheets of plasterboard or otherwise. A common mistake is not having the proper width of the jambs to allow for the installation of trims.

The floor in the bathroom is usually made of different materials than in the hallway. From an aesthetic point of view, it is important that the joints of the two types of flooring are hidden under the canvas.

Once we have decided on the issues related to safety, ventilation and comfort, we can approach the design selection. The basic rule is to match the character of the bathroom interior. Manufacturers offer a wide selection of bathroom models, so we can choose any color, material from which they are made, and accessories (handles, locks).

It is worth deciding in advance whether we want an opaque wooden or veneered door or a glazed option. An interesting option for solid wood models, especially for lovers of marine motifs, is a porthole window.

Glazing will illuminate a dark room and add lightness to the massive canvas. If we want to achieve the effect of lightness and transparency, glass doors will be the best. Thanks to them, the room will become bright and have a modern look. They are easy to match to your interior design because they are available in a variety of colors and textures.

A fairly common and erroneous opinion is that the doors to the bathroom and toilet can be identical in size and properties to all interior doors in an apartment or house. This is not entirely true, because problems or doubts rarely arise when choosing interior doors. And if you decide to purchase bathroom doors, be prepared to encounter a number of features that you should not neglect.

Naturally, no one claims that it is absolutely forbidden to use standard interior doors to install a bathroom or toilet. Can! But remember that after time and active use, your product will become unusable. The only question is, is it worth paying twice?

Therefore, in order to avoid serious mistakes in purchasing a door, it would not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the basic standard dimensions of a bathroom door and its properties, so that using the door brings you only aesthetic pleasure, and not sheer inconvenience associated with the loss of the operational properties of the product.

When choosing an ordinary interior door, most often we focus on its appearance, how harmoniously it will complement the interior of the room, its durability and the environmental properties of the material used.

The bathroom, according to its purpose and operating conditions, puts forward slightly different requirements, namely, increased moisture protection and resistance to climate change.

When purchasing new doors, it is not recommended to give preference to products finished with natural veneer. This material is susceptible to deformation when exposed to moisture. And yet, if you like natural veneer, choose only the model whose veneer surface is coated with a special protective varnish against moisture.

Please note that the best option would be to choose a product that comes with a frame, this will guarantee that after installation, the door will open and close correctly.

There is always a way out

The most difficult situation is faced by the owners of some standard apartments of old construction. Who, in order to find a new door, have to focus on the parameters of the old door. This means that not the design features or color palette will be the determining factor here, but only the dimensions (550 mm width and 1900 mm height).

When the old set has already been dismantled and it is not possible to calculate its dimensions, when choosing a door block you should start from the dimensions of the existing opening. Moreover, it is necessary to subtract at least 70 mm from its width, and about 50 mm from its height (if a threshold is not planned).

Very often, even minor redevelopment of the old housing stock entails serious repairs. Because we have to abandon the mezzanine and further strengthen the new opening. But the desire to get out of the limited framework will certainly lead to the fact that later, if it is necessary to install a standard door set, you will not have to carry out a full-fledged repair. And there are far more options for 600 x 2000 doors available today.
