The discussion about the safety of PVC has been going on almost since the beginning of the mass use of materials made from it, and, in particular, PVC profiles in the construction industry. As has been noted many times by experts in the chemical industry, over more than half a century of production and operation of PVC products with “lead” stabilizers in Europe have not recorded any evidence of a negative effect of PVC on human health. Preparation of mixtures for extrusion? The stage at which lead could hypothetically pose a hazard is extremely strictly regulated and controlled. And the lead already present in PVC in the form of salt is not released from the material in any way during the operation of the finished product.

However, as part of reducing the use of heavy metals and their compounds in industry, the EU Environmental Commission has proposed that manufacturers significantly reduce their use of lead by the end of 2005. The PVC industry (extruders, stabilizer manufacturers, etc.) have taken their own initiative to completely ban lead for use in industry by 2015. This initiative was adopted in Brussels by the European Union Environmental Commission. The next step in this direction will be the adoption of the relevant law.

Thus, in the very near future, European manufacturers will be forced to switch to “lead-free” recipe if they want to remain within the framework of European Union law. In this regard, the replacement of lead salts in the formulation of stabilizers with calcium and zinc compounds is becoming the latest environmental standard in Europe, to which leading companies engaged in PVC extrusion are just beginning to transfer their production.

Experiments on the use of stabilizers based on calcium and zinc began quite a long time ago. To date, a significant international archive of relevant conclusions based on test results has been accumulated.

So, according to the “EU Chemicals Directive for the Polymer Industry”, “calcium-zinc” Stabilizers are recognized as non-toxic and do not generate toxic substances when combined with other additives in PVC. Test results from the Federal Institute for Materials Science (VAM) showed that PVC profiles containing “calcium-zinc?” (Ca/Zn) stabilizers retain the properties of profiles with “lead stabilizers,” but are more resistant to aggressive atmospheric environments. At the same time, the profile surface acquires a stable silky-matte gloss.

For profile processors, the transition to a new recipe does not entail changes in the technological process of profile processing. Thus, processors of profiles based on calcium-zinc stabilizers gain additional arguments in the competition.

Remaining committed to the traditions of quality, the profine concern, which owns the KBE (KBE) brand, is constantly modernizing the production and technology of extrusion of PVC profiles. The profine concern and the KBE brand were among the first in the industry to announce the transition to an environmentally neutral formulation based on calcium and zinc compounds. The 100% transition took place at the concern’s production facilities around the world, including the plant in Russia.
