Do-it-yourself window installation in a dacha - brief instructions

When planning to replace old windows with new ones, many wonder how difficult it is to install them yourself. The answer is a job of medium complexity. In terms of time, replacing a medium-sized window with dismantling the old one takes about 3.5-4.5 hours. This is for a person with no experience. Company employees who do this all the time spend less than an hour on it. But the installation of plastic windows by the owner of the premises cannot be compared with the hasty work of “professionals”. They simplify the process to the point of indecency, arguing that prices have not been raised for 6 years and they have no time to waste time on trifles. If you are lucky to find truly masters, then you can entrust the installation to them. If not, take a weekend and install it yourself.

Windows for a summer house - choice of double-glazed windows

You should decide in advance what to glaze your country house with. Wooden frames are inexpensive, but have more disadvantages than modern double-glazed windows. The latter are almost ideal, of course, subject to proper installation and compliance with preventive measures. Namely:

  1. Regular inspection of seals. You need to lubricate them with glycerin or used oil, then the rubber bands will become soft and opening and closing will be easy.
  2. Maximum isolation from external manifestations. In the absence of the owners, windows should not be allowed to become covered with condensation or become covered with ice. Therefore, the structure must be carefully insulated with polystyrene boards or cotton wool materials.
  3. Switching the entire structure to winter mode when necessary. The mechanism for pressing the valves has risks that you should be guided by. The master installer or company manager is required to show how to use them when delivering the products to the site.
  4. If this is not done, then possible weather conditions will clog the structure with snow. This will cause moisture stagnation, the consequences of which are obvious.

  5. Checking the window unit every year for compliance with the level. A wooden house will constantly shrink, which will naturally affect the block. They check the glass unit along the bottom edge and, if there are discrepancies, carry out repairs - remove the sashes and correct the flaws with spacer wedges without disturbing the casing.
  6. Regular cleaning of not only the surface of the glass, but also cleaning of frames, joints, and fittings. Mechanical components should be lubricated by working out, but do not allow greasy drips, otherwise they will attract dust and dirt.

Of course, modern wooden window systems are also good. They also do not require painting, are equipped with good glass, and retain heat. But only wealthy owners can put them in a dacha, visited only during the season: it’s not the price, but the vandals who operate mainly through the openings.

Do-it-yourself window installation in a dacha

So, having ordered plastic double-glazed windows for the holes prepared in the walls, you can get to work:

Preparing the opening

It consists of dismantling old frames, casing and preparing wood for installing a new block. Namely:

  1. Dry frames are removed after removing the glass from them. You need to work carefully, wearing gloves. Using a pry bar, take out the nails and unscrew the screws with a screwdriver. The casings are also removed; then the hole is cleaned of any remaining insulation, sealant and foam.
  2. The clean opening is inspected for damage - rot, mold. If defects are found, they are eliminated by grinding or replacing the old timber or log with a new one. The finished hole is carefully treated with protective compounds, since this will not be possible later.

The work is carried out when new packages have already been delivered. Moisture must not be allowed to enter the house. If the work is delayed, then you need to cover the holes with a piece of polyethylene.

Installation

First, the casing box is constructed. This is like a box made of edged boards up to 5 cm thick. Its width is equal to the opening, its height is 10–12 cm lower.

This is due to the fact that the upcoming shrinkage will put pressure on the glass unit, so the window will become a kind of shell for it. A sealant is placed in the empty gap, and thus the house will be protected from the penetration of cold.

Further:

  1. The ends of the logs or beams most likely already have grooves or tenons. Installation of the frame is required based on their availability: the internal groove must contain bars; they are not reinforced, but only wrapped with a sealant. The box fixed to them will move along the guides, thereby reducing the pressure on the window structure.
  2. If a tenon is cut out at the ends, the groove is located in the casing guides. The tenon is also wrapped with sealant when inserted. The last option is good for plastic double-glazed windows, since they cannot be subjected to additional compression due to shrinkage.
  3. The box should be fixed only in movable bars, making sure that the fasteners do not go into the wood of the structure: it can split it. Or, due to the onset of corrosion, the fasteners may rot and fall out of place. In addition, corrosion is always an indicator of high humidity and incipient deterioration: if you miss the moment, you may not see mold on the openings, as the threshold of rot.
  4. When the box is installed, the glass unit is inserted into it, slightly deepening the hole inside. This is necessary so that in the future you can easily install a drainage device - a device that drains rainwater. It is usually made from a metal strip. If it is not included in the kit, then you can make the ebb yourself from a piece of galvanized iron, bending the edge accordingly.
  5. Next, the glass unit itself is fixed, disassembling it into its component parts - sashes separately from the frame. It must be secured into a box of appropriate length with self-tapping screws or anchor bolts.
  6. You shouldn’t tighten it too much at first; you need to adjust the frame. When the result is satisfactory, the final fastening begins. After installation, the technological gaps are foamed with a mounting compound.

After the main installation of a do-it-yourself dacha window, it is equipped with ebbs, slopes and a window sill. Now the work is finished.

Errors in installing plastic windows

In an effort to maintain a limited budget for any construction work, the owners do everything on their own, without the proper skills. As a result, the operation of window units often becomes, to put it mildly, not the most comfortable, even if the windows for the dacha are made according to the instructions. Sometimes specialists go to the site to completely remake such a “masterpiece.”

The reasons for this are as follows:

  • Skewed design. Most likely, the home-grown master was guided by the edges of the openings, neglecting the level. The problem can be solved by inserting spacer wedges under the wooden casing. You will have to remove the sashes and slopes in order to put them in place after correcting the defect and cover the unsightly areas.
  • Fogging of glass. If there is poor ventilation in the house, then, first of all, it should be remodeled, otherwise no other actions will help. When everything is in order, a special valve is mounted on the window: it will let in a sufficient amount of fresh air and take away the waste warm masses, acting with them on the formed ice. If the dacha is not visited in winter, then the valve is closed completely so as not to freeze the house.
  • Jamming of the sashes. Most likely, these are the consequences of shrinkage and lack of heat in the room during the off-season. It is necessary to insulate the house in advance if it is assembled from timber or logs with a cross-section of less than 260 mm. Otherwise, the wood will begin to freeze, and, in the end, the moisture will affect not only the window opening, but also all the structural elements of the building.

Strong recommendation: if possible, entrust the installation to a professional. After all, the craftsmen give a guarantee for their work, as well as for finished double-glazed windows. In case of damage or errors in installation, they will be replaced at the expense of the company, and not from your own pocket.

Aligning the window opening

If the windows are not installed in a new house, it is first necessary to carry out high-quality dismantling of the existing windows. This is achieved with the help of an electric jigsaw and a mount (in case saving the windows does not make sense).

If necessary, we repair the window opening. It is necessary to ensure that all four surfaces of the opening are smooth. It is recommended to evaluate the surface using specialized construction equipment, and not by eye.

Naturally, the window opening is selected more than the geometry of the window frame itself. After all, it is necessary to position it in such a way that the horizontal guides of the profile are exclusively parallel to the horizon line.

How to make a window out of wood

Those who like to make any designs will want to make a wooden window with their own hands. It is advisable to use laminated veneer lumber as a material if the owners want the handicraft window to last for a long time. The easiest way is to make a single-chamber package. To work, you will also need appropriate glass, wood glue, and an electric jigsaw.

Stages:

  1. First, a frame is made from two parts of the frame. The timber is sawn into pieces commensurate with the opening and carefully treated with protective compounds. It is best to use a jigsaw with thin files: this will neatly separate the wood into lamellas.
  2. They need to be treated immediately with sandpaper so that the appearance of the handicraft does not cause any criticism. Subsequently, the product can be painted, but the natural grain of wood always wins over synthetic materials.

  3. You cannot fasten cut blocks for assembly to each other with self-tapping screws or dowels: they may fall out over time. To connect, tenons and grooves are cut out on the guides and, coated with glue, are subsequently knocked down. After drying, the resulting box is polished and all defects are eliminated - cracks, burrs.
  4. Glass is placed on one part of the wooden box. Its edges are pre-treated with silicone sealant, then they will not vibrate during further use. Then the wood is generously coated with wood glue.
  5. You can use liquid nails. Next, without hesitation, apply the cut glass to the frame and immediately cover it with the other half. The corners of the resulting glass unit must be kept under load for several days.

  6. You can assemble a structure with imposts and glazing beads if you want to create original versions. To do this, the frame is first laid out “dry”, and then, after adjusting all the parts, one half is fixed, and then the second into a single whole. There are still no connecting fasteners.

The finished wooden window is installed in the same way as a polyvinyl chloride double-glazed window - a frame is constructed, and the block is installed in its place. The window for the cottage, made by yourself, is ready. The process of manufacturing a sash system has similar stages.

Window shutters for the garden

If you follow the traditions of a wooden house, then frames without shutters will be incomplete. In addition, they also have a protective function. They can be different: solid, carved, single- or double-leaf.

It's not difficult to make them yourself. For handicraft production, do-it-yourself shutters for dacha windows are of the solid type with two sashes. Sequence of work:

  1. You will need frame bars and moisture-resistant plywood. All wood should be thoroughly impregnated with protective compounds before starting work. For subsequent processing, it is covered with drying oil: during installation it will be absorbed and less decorating composition will be required.
  2. The frame is cut and knocked down, as in the case of making a window. Focus on the height of the finished slope and the middle of the opening - it will be the edge of the shutter. The bars are knocked together after tenons and grooves are cut out on them and the gaps are coated with liquid glue.
  3. The blanks are connected together, and the selected lock is attached to them from the inside. It can be hidden or threaded. Eyelets or other components are immediately fixed symmetrically on the two halves of the shutter.
  4. A blind shutter leaf can be made of wooden bars (these are slats that are pressed onto the frame, the distance between them is minimal) or made entirely of a sheet of plywood; it can later become a field for creativity.
  5. It is important to consider hanging hinges for shutters. They are either hidden inside the window opening on a bar fixed to the slope, or they are made open, but then it will not be difficult for attackers to remove them. Shutters will only protect from rain or hail.
  6. The finished structure is connected and hung in place. You should immediately check the alignment of the valves; if there are errors, they must be eliminated immediately. A tight connection in the future can break the doors or jam them, since the wood will constantly absorb moisture and dry out during evaporation.

False windows on the facade and in the interior

Recently, it has become fashionable to hide the imperfections of the facade with the help of false windows. For a dacha property, this is the right decision, because it is sometimes built from untreated timber. In this case, an imitation of a window opening is performed directly on the facade or corner of the house where beautiful bushes are located - in a word, so that the product has a harmonious appearance.

Installation sequence:

  1. The surface of the wall is carefully processed so that the roughness of the timber becomes barely noticeable. It is important to bleach the wood, otherwise the decor will be inappropriate.
  2. Pictures on the theme of antiquity, tavern shutters, and rustic motifs are selected as drawings. More complex ones are usually installed on plastered facades.
  3. Then they construct false windows at the dacha with their own hands: a frame with shutters, blind or carved, is knocked together.
  4. The product is attached to the selected location, and the installation can be considered complete.

It turns out unusual and noble. This option is very good for those who like to make even a small building cozy and beautiful. You can decorate false structures with the following elements:

  • With drawings. Transferred to textiles or film, they are thickly varnished, installed on the wall of the house, and then the finished frame is nailed on top. The theme can be any: children's pictures, flower theme, animals, etc. It is important that it is in harmony with the meaning.
  • Carved. Work for true craftsmen and cabinetmakers. There are options for false windows showing icons. It looks peaceful.
  • Firing. Following the type of children's creativity, the wall where the false window will be installed is painted with an electrical device in accordance with the vision of the owners. By the way, such work can be entrusted to children - let them take part in the construction. You just need to follow fire safety precautions and constantly monitor the process.
  • Shutters. You can decorate without any artistic flourishes if you create a shutter design and hang it on the wall in the form of false openings. An ethnic note will be visible in this. The method is especially suitable for home-grown masters who do not “suffer” from talent in art.

So, instructions have been given for assembling wooden and inserting plastic double-glazed windows. It’s up to the owners to do everything themselves or invite specialists if the instructions seem difficult. It is important to remember that window and door fillings are very important for a comfortable stay in the country, so they must be installed with no less care than in a residential building.

Fastening the window frame

It is strongly recommended to use appropriate fasteners for mounting. As mentioned above, plastic glazing is considered one of the heaviest. The optimal choice would be 4 anchors.

Each anchor is installed on its own side. If we are talking about windows whose vertical profiles are made in a significant increase (windows made to order), it is allowed to use two anchors on the long side of the window.

You should also adhere to the following recommendations:

  • the use of polyurethane foam is considered mandatory;
  • platbands on the outside MUST be used;
  • Setting up the fittings of a plastic window is carried out after the installation is completely completed.

The fact is that not all ordinary people know about the true functions of the window frames, which are located on the facade of the building. They block the access of ultraviolet rays from sunlight to the polyurethane foam.

Ultraviolet light quickly and actively destroys polyurethane foam. Failure to follow the recommendation can also lead to drafts.
