Real English windows: features and distinctive characteristics

A window is an important and necessary detail of a room; it is impossible to imagine a room without a window. Now these designs are made in different styles and designs. Vertical windows are an interesting design; they are becoming popular and in demand. Their difference from conventional swing models lies in the method of opening. The doors are fixed in a certain position. They do not require free space to move.

This method of glazing appeared in England. Later it was used in other countries. Previously, wood was used to produce profiles; nowadays, aluminum and plastic are still used.

Glazing methods

Vertical lifting profiles come in two types:

  • The English version is Single Hung, only one sash rises upward, it is placed on a fixed frame.
  • The Double Hung system is an American imitation, both doors move.

There are two types of designs:

  1. Single-leaf, they are used in Europe due to the peculiarities of the structures. The sash slides towards the outer wall.
  2. Double-leaf or American, classic, the system is called Single Hung. One frame is fixed, the other moves on top of the first.

In three-leaf versions, the frames open towards each other. The middle leaf remains stationary, the upper and lower ones are movable. Frames can be secured using brakes.

When choosing a glazing method, the type and architecture of the building and the weight of the future structure are taken into account.

Advantages and disadvantages of English windows

The positive qualities of frames of this type include the following features:

  1. The sliding design saves space. This expands the functionality of the window sill; for example, you can arrange flowers without having to remove them every time you need to open the window.
  2. Placing the fittings inside the structure eliminates the possibility of opening the window from the outside. This type of frame allows the installation of additional alarm sensors.
  3. The lifting sash system allows you to ventilate the room even with strong winds outside. Bad weather does not threaten to break the open sash.
  4. The moving parts are equipped with seals, and the fittings are equipped with special gaskets. This reduces the risk of blowing and drafts.
  5. Systems with folding fittings make it easy to wash glass from the outside on any floor.
  6. Classic curtains complemented by roller shutters are well suited to English windows.

Despite the list of positive qualities, there are a number of negative aspects of English-type windows:

  1. Installing a double-glazed window eliminates the inherent elegance of the style of these windows. This drawback is solved by embroidering the sashes with sprats - decorative overlays.
  2. The doors have significant weight, and the design requires manual lifting. This requires effort even if some weight is compensated by the lifting parts.
  3. It is necessary to change the rubber seals every year, otherwise the tightness of the joint between the sashes will be disrupted.
  4. English windows open to a maximum of 1/2 sash. In an extreme situation, a large person will not be able to leave the room through the window.
  5. Regarding swing structures, the English type has a higher cost.

Lift-and-slide structures

English windows are classics; they convey the special ancient atmosphere of Britain. Thanks to them, an ordinary home becomes cozy and stylish. Such profiles save space indoors. You can place any furniture near the window.

Differences:

  • When opening, the frames move vertically.
  • The principle of operation is based on raising the lower sash above the upper one.
  • To open the frame, loosen the clamp.
  • In the upper position, the module is fixed with counterweights and special mechanisms.

The improved system is equipped with turn signals; the sash can be rotated or tilted.

The possibility of blowing out the room is excluded. The distance between the frame and the profile is sealed with a sealant. The fittings have protective inserts. Such windows are difficult to open from the outside; they fit securely and tightly. They can be equipped with an additional anti-burglary device.

Products are made from any material:

  • plastic;
  • wood;
  • aluminum

Vertical windows harmonize well with blinds and roller shutters. They fit together perfectly and look like one whole mechanism. The module is completed with an anti-mosquito net.

History of English windows

Frames opening vertically appeared in the 17th century. on the territory of Great Britain. The design included two parts: the lower one rose half the height of the window or as required for ventilation. This type of window became widespread in the warm regions of Europe and was brought to North America by English settlers. This type of window is still the most popular in the USA.

Lift-and-slide profiles with thermal insulation

In Russia, vertical sliding windows are often used in cold rooms. Glazing in residential buildings is performed using warm plastic profile EnergyCore.

It is used in American versions of Double Hung (Double Hung) in which:

  • the upper frame remains stationary;
  • the lower one rises up and is fixed tightly.

This system is used for tall windows when it is difficult to reach the top frame.

For thermal insulation, energy-saving spraying is used on the inner glass. Heat-insulating liners are used in the threshold and frame to keep the door warm in winter and cool in summer. Insulation can also be done with your own hands.

Profile

If earlier the frames of English windows were made exclusively of wood, today plastic is most often used. More precisely, an improved PVC profile with an air-chamber contour. It provides the frame with additional rigidity and increases the thermal insulation effect by approximately four times compared to conventional plastic systems.

The indisputable advantage of windows with PVC frames is that they can install not only single-chamber, but also double-glazed windows, which save heat much better

However, you won’t surprise anyone with plastic glass panes these days. A new trend is a fiberglass composite profile. This material, composed of 70% glass and 30% polyester resin, can be compared in strength to steel. But at the same time, it is not susceptible to corrosion and has excellent heat-saving characteristics.

How are they achieved? During the production process, glass fiber is impregnated with polymer compounds, compacted in a special form and passed through a die (a metal plate with calibrated holes) at high temperature. To make the profile even stronger, the proportion of fiberglass in it is increased. This allows you to make frames of smaller thickness, which means that window structures will be less bulky.

Materials for production

Structures are usually made of three materials. The choice depends on the design and architecture of the building, cost, reliability.

Aluminum

Frames made of aluminum have the following advantages:

  • efficiency;
  • a light weight;
  • strength;
  • long service life.

An aluminum profile will last at least 50 years, maintaining performance and without losing its decorative effect. The material does not provide good thermal insulation. It is mainly used for cold glazing.

Wood

A suitable option for our climate is wooden windows.

Advantages:

  • Withstands temperature changes, summer heat, and high humidity.
  • They are environmentally friendly and have good heat capacity.

Disadvantages: high cost.

Such windows are used for warm glazing. Installation requires a good foundation, such as brickwork.

Natural wood creates a prestigious design. High-quality processing ensures the reliability and durability of the product. Oak, larch, alder, and pine are most often used.

Plastic

Especially popular are designs made of PVC.

Among the advantages of this profile are:

  • Ability to withstand heavy loads thanks to the internal steel frame.
  • Double glazed windows protect against cold, wind, noise and dust.
  • Such products are quite affordable.
  • Moisture resistant.
  • Do not rot.
  • Do not crack, do not swell.

Thermal insulation is provided thanks to hollow chambers installed inside the profile. Plastic withstands weather conditions well.

Operating principle and device

American windows work by moving the lower sash, which moves up/down on a special slide, along the second, fixed part. Currently, frames made of plastic and wood are made in the classic style for one leaf, as well as for two and three, which allows them to be installed in any room. In Russia, due to climatic conditions, the pseudo-English type is more common.

Profile

Plastic slider windows have the same design as classic wooden frames. They are equipped not with one large glass, but with a complex of smaller ones, which are connected by slats. Modern English-style window frames are made from PVC, equipped with single-glazed windows and decorative beads.

During frame manufacturing, pieces of molded PVC are cut to specific dimensions and soldered together to form the frame. The profile may have several hollow internal sections. The number of cameras affects the characteristics of the window: the more there are, the better the sound insulation. To prevent curvature of the supporting structure due to mechanical damage or temperature changes, the frame is reinforced with steel liners, which makes the frame more rigid. To order it is possible to produce sliders from wood.

Double-glazed window

At the base of the window there is a double-glazed window made of several glasses. It is attached to the frame with special glazing beads. The design is completely sealed, which is ensured by precise sizing, a thick layer of sealant at the ends and rubber seals. To prevent condensation from accumulating in the bag, small holes for drainage are provided on the lower outer part of the frame.

Accessories

The opening and reliable closing of the sash, the ventilation mode, and the tightness of the closed window are ensured by the guides and locking parts of the structure. Their quality directly affects reliability, burglary protection, heat loss and sound insulation.

The fittings include the following parts:

  • handles that differ from ordinary ones and are protrusions and recesses;
  • bridges along which the doors slide;
  • clamps holding the open sash in the desired position;
  • locking design (it not only secures the window in the closed position, but also protects against external break-in).

Pros and cons of registration of shprosam

18 mm sprocket bars in windows photo

Separating elements on windows provide emotional and aesthetic pleasure to owners and passers-by. There are other advantages to this design:

  • there are no protrusions on the outside, which means that dust and dirt will not accumulate in the corners, and there will also be no streaks or streaks left after rain;
  • the frame is easy to care for, the decorative elements do not have obstacles or protrusions, so they are convenient to wash;
  • a large selection of layouts allows you to choose the appropriate model of planks; in addition to geometric shapes, various curls, bends and more complex patterns are made;
  • even with long-term use, the sprocket does not lose its shape, the color does not fade;
  • the slats, which are located inside the frame, do not impair the technical characteristics of the double-glazed window.

Each type has its own disadvantages, for example, overhead panels must be removed when washing the glass. There are complaints about large patterns and stripes; they prevent the penetration of light, making the room dark.

Care

Sliding windows, unlike casement windows, require more careful maintenance. Therefore, let's take a closer look at the features of caring for sliding windows on the balcony. Mandatory maintenance elements include adjusting locks, adjusting limiters (they can get lost), lubricating fittings, and cleaning the surface from dust and dirt. It is worth noting that it is necessary to clean not only the surface of the glass unit and profile, but also the insides of the gutters, seals and other elements of sliding windows.

If cracks have formed on the surface, they urgently need to be sanded and covered with a special product. It is enough to lubricate the fittings once a year, but if it wears out quickly, you can lubricate it once every six months. Regular machine oil is suitable for this purpose, or you can purchase a specialized product from the manufacturer. The surface of the profile itself must be wiped from dust at least once a week; this is not only the care of interior elements, but also the prevention of allergic diseases. It is enough to wash the glass itself once every 2-3 weeks with specialized products and a soft cloth.

Where to install?

Sliding glazing is used on balconies, more often on those with a small area. After all, this method of opening significantly saves space, which is why it is used on small loggias. Sliding windows can also be installed in ordinary window openings, both in an apartment and in a private house. However, it is worth noting that such windows have low thermal insulation properties (when compared with casement windows), so in such places it is better to choose another option. But for a gazebo or veranda, a sliding aluminum system is an excellent and budget option.

How to choose?

In order to correctly select windows, you must first decide on a budget: how much money you are willing to spend on it (don’t forget to count the costs of materials and payment for installation services). After that, choose the type of windows: cold or warm type, opening method, material of manufacture, and so on. Don't forget to look at the thermal insulation and sound insulation characteristics - this is very important. And of course, do not forget to take into account such basic characteristics as size, weight and thickness.

Installation

To install aluminum frames on the balcony, it is necessary to dismantle the old glazing. Then you should install the profile by inserting the frame into the grooves. Don't forget to secure the profiles with self-tapping screws and then with anchors. Be sure to seal all the cracks, otherwise it will blow in both winter and summer. Regular polyurethane foam will help with this. All that remains is to insert the double-glazed windows into the frames and check the functionality of the windows.

This is where the glazing ends, you can be satisfied with the work done. But if you do not have experience installing sliding windows, then it is better to call someone familiar with these skills. As a last resort, it is better to call a team of specialists for money than to do it yourself without knowing how to do it (in this case, you will make a large number of mistakes, correcting which you will have to spend a considerable amount of money).

Double-glazed windows

Most often, double-glazed windows are installed in English windows. They have an optimal price-quality ratio and provide the required level of heat and noise insulation. Glass can be 4-, 5- or 6-mm, regular sheet, tempered, self-cleaning. Sometimes, for security reasons, triplex is installed. As for the geometric parameters, the minimum sash width is 750 mm, the maximum is 2800 mm. Window height - from 800 mm and no more than 2800 mm.

Among the obvious advantages of lifting windows, we note the ease of operation. Pressure locks allow you to open, close and tilt the doors indoors without much effort

Modern models are rare in our market. In Russia, such windows (with double-glazed windows) can be chosen in, in City Windows or in Toks.

Here they are assembled from foreign materials or an already assembled product is purchased. These models are also offered by representative companies from Latvia. Therefore, our price for English windows ranges from 10 to 50 thousand rubles.

Homemade designs

Window diagram

Traditional designs with single glass can be made independently, guided by the diagram.

English window design.

Even a blind window with a double-glazed window will look like the English version if there are linings on its glass. Therefore, homemade analogues are often made blank, but with decorative inserts - sprats.

It is clear that it is easier to make a fixed English window with your own hands, and its energy savings are greater. Such examples are especially effective in country mansions and balconies, as they embody palace respectability and inviolability.

Windows with frames: general information

Shprosy is a window structure, which is designed in the form of lattice lines and decorative patterns. Overlay elements can serve both a decorative and functional role.

The layouts add a beautiful design to the façade of the building. Venetian and Viennese decoration brings coziness to the room and creates a medieval atmosphere.

Popular strips are in the form of strips, which are combined into a single form, these can be:

  • square;
  • rectangle;
  • rhombus;
  • rounded figures.

Externally, simple plastic windows decorated with strings resemble stained glass, but without multi-colored glass. Most often, layouts are matched to match the window frames, although there are examples when the customer wants the decor to contrast with the profile.

Where to use sliding windows?

Accessories

Fittings are one of the main and integral parts of a lift-and-slide structure, therefore, to achieve high quality, we use fittings (Germany) - a leader with a century-old history.

In the standard version, the door design is equipped with manual control with a built-in microlift. The manual control system is very reliable and requires virtually no effort to move a sash weighing up to 300 kg.

For the most sophisticated clients, we offer the HAUTAU automation system “ATRIUM HS® 300 E”. This fully remote control system guarantees maximum comfort from using a tilt-and-slide window or door while maintaining an ideal appearance, since the most noticeable part is the control panel. If the room is equipped with a Smart Home system, the HAUTAU automation kit will ideally fit into the control system of your home.

What are they made of?

In fact, sliding windows have the simplest design among all types of window systems. The main elements are a frame made of the selected material, a seal, a roller, a double-glazed window, a sash and a sill. All these elements are needed to perform the functions of a sliding window. You can also note the window sill, which does not belong to the window itself, but performs two important functions: decorative and protective. Indeed, sliding windows with a window sill look much more attractive than without it, and their service life is noticeably increased thanks to this simple design.
