Along with the installation of plastic windows, it is best to install a PVC window sill, which is logical. The use of identical materials ensures a harmonious combination of structural elements. This also means full compliance with technical characteristics, the same service life of products and surface care. Therefore, PVC window sills are ideal for plastic windows, which can be matched to any color scheme of the window structure. This choice allows you to improve the functional features of the window design and decorate the interior with taste.
How to read markings on double-glazed plastic windows?
An example of the simplest encoding is 4-16-4. This is a design of two four-millimeter glasses and a 16-mm frame between them. The absence of letters indicates the simplest polished glass without special effects. Below is a breakdown of the glass unit markings according to GOST.
Glass type
- M - standard polished version without special effects.
- F - float glass with increased strength and thermal protection.
- PI - with energy-saving film.
- K - with a hard low-emission coating and protection against minor damage.
- I - with a soft low-emission coating that provides an energy-saving effect.
- S—color of the entire structure—“in bulk.”

The camera is created by installing a spacer frame between the glasses. Its smallest size is 6 mm. Traditionally, the width of the frames can be 10, 12, 16 ... 36 mm. The latter is designed for a wide window profile of at least 78 mm. In the marking of a double-glazed window according to GOST, the dimensions of the chamber are indicated in the middle of the code. For example, 4-16-4 is a 16 mm frame, the “-” sign means the simplest option - just a vacuum.

Where is the marking of plastic windows applied?
Designations are applied to the surface of the spacer frame. They are clearly visible to the naked eye. The following information is encrypted there:
- serial number,
- manufacturer,
- constructive symbolism,
- date of manufacture.
Example:
18,772 REHAU 4-16-4 07/12/2018
This encryption says that the glass unit is single-chamber, standard, with glasses 4 mm thick and a distance between them of 16 mm, produced by REHAU on July 12, 2022. The first 5 digits at the beginning are the serial number.
Installation of plastic window sills in accordance with GOST
Installation of a plastic window sill is carried out in several ways. Basically, the products are installed so that the board fits into the wall on both sides to a small depth (from 1.5 to 3 cm), and is wider than the opening . The product should be longer and wider than the area under the window where it will be installed; this will not only help strengthen it well and fix it better, it will look much better from an aesthetic point of view.
Window sill installation diagram
Installation stages
- Recesses in the slopes are made using a chisel and a hammer; you can also use another suitable tool.
To install the window sill you need to make recesses in the slopes - The window sill board is inserted under the frame by about 1 cm. It happens that there is a large gap between the panel and the bottom of the opening, but it can be reduced using cement mortar, leaving 5-10 mm to run the board.
- Before proceeding with installation, the site should be cleared of debris and dust, and then checked for unevenness, so a building level will be required. Cement mortar is used to level the surface.
- When the site is prepared, you can begin installing the window sill board.
To fix the PVC window sill, use a mortar - When the board is completely installed, the protective covering is removed and the unsightly ends are covered with decorative caps, which are best purchased immediately.
The protective coating of the window sill must be removed after installation.
Installation of the window sill is quite simple; it is not necessary to have professional skills. The main requirements are accuracy and compliance with certain rules:
- Do not press hard on the surface when sawing, this will help avoid deformation and chips.
- Take your time and cut after everything has been measured to precision.
This will help even a non-professional to do everything carefully and efficiently, which will be the key to a long service life. Fastening PVC window sill boards in accordance with GOST is carried out using mortar, special glue (“liquid nails”), polyurethane foam or metal fasteners (profiles) with screws or self-tapping screws.
To eliminate the gap under the installed window sill, use foam
It is most convenient to fill the space that has formed under the installed window sill with polyurethane foam.
Features of PVC window markings
The above encodings are borrowed from European manufacturers. Russian regulations have introduced their own abbreviation - based on the first letter of a significant characteristic.
- impact resistance - U;
- noise protection - Ш;
- sun protection - C;
- frost resistance - M;
- energy saving - E.
On the Internet, along with the markings of plastic windows, their significant characteristics are often searched for. The request can be formulated as follows: “single-chamber solar-protective glass unit” or “4-16-4E”. To avoid mistakes, call the managers of Window Technologies. We will advise you on the choice of profile and glass unit and recommend an option for your home.
Useful information about markings on plastic windows
March 03, 2020
The marking of plastic windows is extremely useful information; if you know how to read it, you can find out everything you need about the product that will be installed or is already installed in your window opening. You will know for sure that the manufacturer has supplied you with a window structure with exactly the parameters that were specified in your order. For the most part, markings on PVC windows refer to the parameters of the double-glazed window, specifically the number and width of chambers, the type of glass used, filling, etc. And since a double-glazed window is one of the main components of a plastic window, this information alone, written in the marking, will allow you to learn a lot of useful information about the design. Let us say right away that the information encrypted in the marking is completely duplicated in the documentation. So, even if you never learn to read the markings, you can easily open the documents for your plastic window and find out everything you need from them.
Manufacturers of PVC windows that respect themselves and their customers make sure that the applied markings are as complete and correct as possible, in accordance with GOST requirements. If the labeling is incomplete or completely missing, this is a direct reason to be wary and think about the correct choice of the company you contacted. Let's begin by describing the information that should be contained in the labeling of plastic windows.
Type of glass
Ordinary glasses are designated by the letter M, after which there may be a certain index. Contrary to popular belief, this index does not indicate the thickness of the glass, but the degree of its quality. The lower the index, the higher quality the installed glass. In high-quality double-glazed windows, M1 glass is used. However, the index is not always placed. Sometimes they simply indicate the letter M. Glass marked K means that a low-emissivity hard coating has been applied to it, which increases thermal insulation and protects against minor damage. Marking I (I) indicates a soft low-emissivity coating, which serves to improve heat-shielding characteristics. The so-called I-glass is the most modern energy-saving solution, increasingly used in modern plastic windows. The letter F indicates the use of float technology, which also refers to energy-saving solutions. And the letter S indicates that the glass was colored in bulk.
Filling the chambers
If it was decided to use filling the glass unit chambers with inert gas as an energy-saving technology, then the corresponding designation will appear in the labeling. For example, the most commonly used gas is argon, which is designated by the letters Ar immediately after the chamber width. The other two noble gases, krypton and sulfur hexafluoride, are designated Kr and SF6, respectively. Often, when filling chambers with gas, the manufacturer indicates this not only on the markings, but also on a bright sticker glued directly to the glass unit.
Double-glazed window formula
Considering all of the above, you can already decipher the formula of a double-glazed window, which is the main part of its marking. For consideration, let’s take the fairly standard formula 4M-16-4M. What can we say from this marking? First, we have ordinary glass M (index not specified), the thickness of which is 4 millimeters. The second number indicates the 16 mm distance between the glasses, which is the width of the glass unit chamber. The third figure is a similar 4 mm standard glass without coating. If we have two glasses and one chamber, then the double-glazed window is single-chamber. A double-glazed window will be marked something like this: 4M-16-4M-16-4M. The thickness of the glass and the distance between them can be different, even within the same glass unit, which allows you to achieve more impressive sound insulation performance. If there is argon inside the chamber, the marking will take the following form: 4M-16Ar-4M.
Additional markings
If a double-glazed window is equipped with additional functionality that is not included in the standard design, this will certainly be reflected in the marking, since this requirement is specified in GOST standards. For example, a double-glazed window with impact-resistant characteristics will be marked with the letters Ud. If a solar control film is applied to a double-glazed window, the corresponding letter S will appear in the marking. The letter Ш will indicate that the double-glazed window is a noise-protective type. The letter M, in addition to designating the type of glass, can also indicate a frost-resistant type of double-glazed window, which is available for use in northern regions. Finally, the letter E will indicate the fact of using energy-saving technologies.
That's not all. If you see a marking with the letter A on the glass, this will mean that your glass is reinforced. The resistance of glass to physical impacts will be marked with a whole alphanumeric set. For example, the most impact-resistant glass is marked with the combinations P5A or P6B. Sometimes the number of cameras in a double-glazed window is indicated by letter parameters. For example, SPO is a single-chamber double-glazed window. And SPT is a three-chamber double-glazed window. And so on.
We have provided you with all the useful information regarding the labeling of double-glazed windows. But there are many more types of markings. For example, fitting mechanisms have their own markings. If we talk about tilt-and-turn fittings, then UPO may be written on it. And on parallel-sliding fittings they write PS. The fittings class, also indicated in the marking from I to III, indicates the maximum weight that the sash can withstand. As for the sashes themselves, their markings are written not on the profile, but in the measurement sheet using symbols. Thus, a triangle pointing upward with its sharp end will indicate a folding system for opening a plastic window. A plus sign in the middle of the empty square will indicate that there will be a blind door in this place.

Sim-sim open up or how to make the life of people confined to a wheelchair more comfortable
Those people whose families contain a person with disabilities, in their desire to create the most comfortable living conditions for a relative, encounter many difficulties. The simplest actions for healthy people turn into an insurmountable obstacle course for people doomed to live in a wheelchair. And this, in turn, can have a negative impact on the psychological state of a person who is forced to accept numerous restrictions that do not allow him to feel free in his own apartment. Today, many manufacturers are taking an active part in solving this problem. In their product lines they include options aimed at creating conditions for more comfortable living for people forced to lead a special lifestyle. Window developers also do not stand aside and make adjustments to window designs to eliminate difficulties for such people associated, for example, with the process of opening and closing windows.

Secondary plastic glazing
The issue of glazing balconies and loggias with a second circuit in modern conditions is raised quite often, which is explained by the emergence of a large number of new buildings in which aluminum glazing or plastic glazing with an insufficient level of thermal protection is installed by default. In this case, the second glazing loop can be a real salvation for those who dream of a well-heated loggia and its integration into the general housing stock of a city apartment. We would like to talk in more detail about the nuances of installing second-loop glazing in our article today.

What kind of windows are installed in Germany?
If we had the opportunity to conduct a survey of German residents, it is unlikely that we would have received a clear answer to this question. Most likely, the choice of one or another type of window (plastic or wooden) in each specific case is influenced not so much by the country of residence as by the presence of other equally significant factors. And one of perhaps the most important indicators in a series of these factors is, of course, the final cost of the window. As they say, when it comes to clothes, stretch your legs, or, a more democratic version of this saying: you can’t jump above your head.

Useful information about GVL slopes
Having installed beautiful and modern plastic windows, you have to solve several more important issues that stand in the way between you and the ideal appearance of the window unit. In particular, you will probably find that beautiful and reliable PVC windows are surrounded on all sides by completely destroyed slopes, which greatly spoil the aesthetics of not only the window structures, but also your entire interior, the thoroughness of which we have no doubt at all. So, having installed new windows, it won’t hurt to immediately take care of restoring the slopes. This will help you not only make the window unit beautiful, but also protect the window and the entire room as a whole from problems with condensation, mold, and lack of heat and sound insulation. You can read about all this in a separate article. As for the current article, in it we would like to talk about the restoration of slopes using such an interesting and modern material as GVL.
