Solar control plastic windows: types of glass and films

The window is the main source of sunlight. In addition to visible light, ultraviolet and infrared radiation penetrates the room, which negatively affects interior items, contributing to their fading. Naturally, tightly closed curtains or blinds do not completely solve the problem. Therefore, manufacturers of plastic windows have equipped them with additional properties: self-cleaning, protection from sunlight, energy saving.

Sun-protective plastic windows are precisely designed to reduce the amount of ultraviolet rays entering the apartment. They are applicable in glazing windows facing south, rooms with active use of air conditioners, as well as verandas and greenhouses, and other rooms where there is excessive sunlight, which turns from a beneficial effect into a problem.

Today, a diverse range of sun protection glasses makes it possible to select a set of characteristics that meet almost any need, while any model can be used in laminated or tempered form.

In order to protect your home from excess sun rays in the summer heat, it is important to know how solar control glass has this effect.

Tinting for sun protection

The simplest and most affordable way to protect yourself from the sun is to stick a lavsan-based film on the glass. It is important to remember that it only reflects part of the light and does not absorb it; accordingly, the room will be dark, but the heat will not disappear anywhere. Tinting can be done in almost any color, which allows you to choose the film to match the interior or exterior of many rooms or buildings. You need to choose the type of film when planning the lighting of the room, since this protective coating is glued at the factory. Unobvious advantages of solar tinting: protection from electromagnetic radiation and from the scattering of fragments in the event of glass breakage.

Benefits of installing solar control glass

In addition to effective sun protection, sun-protection plastic windows give the building an original look thanks to its mirror coating. Patterned glass is also very popular. The variety of their patterns is not limited, and the density of the pattern protects the room from prying eyes and additionally protects from harmful radiation.

Solar control glasses absorb up to 30% of heat. In hot weather, glass prevents the room from overheating, which reduces air conditioning costs. In winter, they reflect the internal heat of the room, which allows you to save on heating.

We recommend reading an article about which double-glazed window to choose: single-chamber, double-chamber or three-chamber? You will find all stages of installation of plastic windows at the link, please pay attention that the work is carried out in accordance with GOST.

Also, plastic windows that protect from the sun prevent fading of furniture, paintings, and carpeted floor coverings. And it reduces eye strain, since the blinding light disappears, the contrast and brightness of illuminated objects decreases.

If the glass is covered with a film, if it breaks, the fragments will not fly in different directions, but will remain on the film.

You can consider such cases, you can choose two options. The first is tinting (like in a car), but it will greatly darken the room. The second is magnetron-coated glass, as is used in office buildings with façade glazing. But the darkening effect of such glasses disappears when the lights are turned on in the apartment in the evening.

Double-glazed windows with different glass thicknesses will best protect against noise. In such cases, the outer glass is thicker - 6 mm or triplex.

Which glass should be installed in a room on the sunny side?

Cost information

The price of such a film coating is directly proportional to its thickness (density), size and light reflectance. By the way, a kit for self-gluing windows with sun protection material is quite cheap. A material that is standard in density will cost the buyer around 150-250 rubles based on application to one double-hung window.

In order for someone who wants to decorate two glasses with a coating with increased density with his own hands, he will have to spend a little more - prices for such a product vary in the range from 250 to 500 rubles .

It is worth noting that if you have the opportunity to purchase a denser material, you should opt for it, since its service life, in comparison with a thin coating, is noticeably longer.

How to apply solar control film on a window with your own hands?

The sequence of independently performing work on gluing solar control film on window glass is described step by step in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer along with the product packaging.

In this case, the essence of applying such tinting, as a rule, comes down to performing the following actions:

  1. Preparation . The packaging with reflective film is carefully opened, and the material itself, rolled into a tube, is taken out and cut to the required size with a small margin (1-2 mm). The excess, if necessary, can later be cut off with a stationery knife directly on the windows. This sunscreen material is sold in two versions: with an already applied adhesive layer and without it. Of course, the first option is preferable to purchase. If you purchased a material in which there is no adhesive base, then the adhesive layer will need to be applied yourself. How? This will be discussed below.
  2. Application . When using a film with an adhesive layer, its edges are freed from the protective material, and then the cut-off part is glued to the entire area of the glass in contact with the street. The bubbles that inevitably arise from air getting under the film are moved along the path of movement using a dry cloth to the edges of the frame. If the reflective material does not have a sticky side, then in order to stick it, you should use a soap solution you made yourself. To prepare such a mixture, either liquid or bar soap, previously grated, is suitable. After mixing with water, the resulting solution is applied to the surface of the glass (not film!) using a sponge, after which the glass sheet is covered with film material cut to size. Removal of formed air bubbles occurs by analogy with the method described above. After several hours of drying, the sun protection film will be firmly attached to the glass.

Which windows are better - wooden or plastic?

29.07.2020

The most widespread option for glazing residential, public, office and commercial buildings today are plastic windows. However, in recent years, the demand for them has begun to gradually decline - double-glazed windows with wooden frames have become significant competition. Both options have pros and cons. Therefore, before ordering glazing, you need to figure out which windows are better - plastic or wooden.

Application

Most often, such glass is used in the construction of public buildings and structures, offices. The material is used to make facade glazing, as well as canopies and awnings. Neutralizing excess ultraviolet radiation not only increases performance, but also reduces the likelihood of malignant skin tumors - primarily melanoma. Solar control glass protects not only people, but also the interior, preventing premature damage to the interior decoration.

The material is also suitable for the manufacture of double-glazed windows in museums and other institutions exhibiting art objects. Glass is also used in winter gardens and greenhouses to protect plants from too intense solar radiation. Double-glazed windows are also in demand in private housing construction.

Patterned light-diffusing glass.

Solar control glass in a double-glazed window with a pattern is by no means often seen today. The applied pattern is a relief design that nicely harmonizes with the entire structure of the window. Some people probably remember that the interior doors of houses, which were commissioned in the 90s of the last century, in most cases included patterned glass with a pattern embossed on them. Similar glass today can be built into a modern double-glazed window.

Of course, today the technologies for applying relief to glass have stepped far forward. However, the purpose of the design remains the same - decoration and creating a certain level of protection of the product from excessive penetration of sun light.

Painted glass.

Glass painting is done in several very thin layers with the addition of certain chemical dyes. The use of this technology allows glass to transmit less light into the room, since the percentage of absorption of light waves in painted glass is quite high.

Like film glass, painted glass can be ordered in almost any shade; fortunately, there is a wide range of their colors on the market. Most often, transparent sheets are coated with brown, yellow or gray paint. Blue and green colors are used a little less often. On request it is possible to supply glass with a rarer combination of colors.
