What is this element?

The strike plate for PVC windows is a critical part made of high-strength steel. It is installed on a vertical impost of the supporting frame, strictly opposite the locking pins.

Operating principle of a structural element:

• When closing the sash, when the handle is in a horizontal position, the trunnion is located in the same plane with the shoulder of the striker.
• When you press the handle and bring it to a vertical position, the trunnion moves, falling into the groove of the counterplate.
• With the correct location of the counter part, the locking mechanism of the fittings is carried out by pressing the sash against the supporting frame of the window.

When choosing a strike plate, you should take into account the dimensions of the groove, as well as the thickness of the element. if these parameters differ from the dimensions of the trunnions, you should choose a more suitable product for comfortable and efficient operation of the window.

Most of the time, people are not aware of the difference between plastic and PVC. However, PVC spacers are an indication not so much of the raw material as of the technology used in the process. In terms of its properties, PVC is as close as possible to galvanized steel. The material has low thermal conductivity and does not change size under the influence of different temperatures. An important advantage of polyvinyl chloride is its resistance to ultraviolet radiation. Unlike ordinary plastic, there is no need to worry about toxic fumes.

You can install the strike plate yourself, as this will require a simple set of tools and consumables, which every home craftsman has at his disposal:

• Pencil or marker for marking.

All tools must be in good working order, sharpened, cleaned of dirt, and adjusted for normal operation.

Selection requirements

The lining strip is a part that cannot be ordered blindly in an online store. In order for it to fit under the new PVC box, it is selected taking into account all the requirements. The wall thickness is more than 2 mm for reliable insulation. It is better to choose a sweet clover equipped with at least two chambers.

Please note: the shade of the base part is always in harmony with the color of the window or 1-2 shades darker than it.

Recommended size of the base part: width 2-4 cm, height – 2-3 cm. The length of the part corresponds to the length of the opening. It is not recommended to attach a window sill or ebb directly to a frame without a profile. This will lead to its damage and depressurization. Excluding the sweet clover when installing the box will lead to problems and possible damage to the frame.

Step-by-step installation instructions

Installing a striker plate for PVC windows is a relatively simple procedure that requires careful marking and compliance with some nuances. Installation is carried out according to the following algorithm :

  The strip is installed upon completion of installation of the window and fittings.

• Before fixing the part, you should adjust the fittings so that the trunnions take a central position, with the possibility of providing play in both directions along the sash profile.
• After installing and adjusting the fittings on the sash, it is necessary to close the window until the trunnion is aligned with the vertical impost of the frame.
• Depending on the direction of travel of the trunnion when closing, at a distance of about 3 - 5 mm from its upper or lower edge, a mark is applied to the impost, which determines the edge of the future striker.
• The window opens to provide free access to the impost; the master transfers the projection of the mark to its end part.
• The distance from the contact part of the frame, on which the polymer seal is installed, to the inner edge of the trunnion is marked on the sash. The same distance is marked on the impost, from its edge.
• A second mark is applied to the frame profile, which will determine the position of the strip relative to the inner edge of the PVC element.
• The plank is combined with the corresponding parts with both risks, after which the master marks the installation locations of the self-tapping screws, strictly along the centers of the holes on the counter plank.
• According to the markings, holes for self-tapping screws are drilled in the profile.
• After drilling, the strip is again applied to the profile and fixed with screws using a screwdriver.
• Before tightening the hardware, it is necessary to attach a level to the strike plate to determine the correctness of its vertical position on the impost.
• After checking the positioning of the strike plate, it is necessary to fix it by tightening each screw with a screwdriver.

After fixing the strip, you should check the locking mechanism of the window structure. If the sash is tightly adjacent to the imposts along the entire perimeter, further actions to adjust the position of the elements are not required, and the window can be operated in normal mode.

To adjust these hardware parts, follow these steps :

1. The distance from the trunnion to the edge of the counter structure when the window handle is in a horizontal position should be no more than 5 mm. If this distance is not maintained, each trunnion must be adjusted by turning the screw at its end.
2. In the case where the technological capabilities of the window do not allow adjusting the trunnion, since the backlash when turning the screw is too small, it is necessary to reinstall the strike plate with new holes for self-tapping screws in the profile.
3. If you find a gap between the sash and the frame, you should study the instructions for the fittings and make sure that the modes can be adjusted depending on the seasons.
   If the fittings are adjusted to summer mode and the trunnions are in a horizontal position, it is necessary to change their angle. As a rule, this setup scheme is performed for Roto or Maco fittings. The trunnions can occupy 3 positions - summer mode (horizontally - the weakest clamping force), demi-season adjustment level (at an angle of 45 degrees) or winter mode (vertical position of the locking element - maximum clamping force).
4. Some strikers are equipped with oval holes, which allows them to be slightly moved vertically after partial loosening of the hardware.

Difficulties and errors in the process, their consequences

During installation of the connector for plastic windows, errors may occur. Here are some of them:

• lack of verification of the correct installation of fittings;
• incorrectly selected screws;
• mismatch between the type of fittings and the type of window.

After installation of the device, it is necessary to check the correctness of the installation. To do this, the master measures the distance from the connector to the edge of the frame. The distance must be measured from above, below and in the middle - it must be the same everywhere.

It is better to take the screws a little smaller in diameter than the size of the drill bit - this will help fix the screw more tightly in the frame.
When tightening the screw, you can apply a little technical grease to it.
Also, before installing the fittings, you need to make sure that they match the type of window. If this is not done, the connector will not be able to perform its intended function.

Replacement

In some cases, during maintenance, installation or repair work, it may be necessary to replace the strike plate.

When might it be required?

Dismantling the old element and replacing it with new fittings is required when any of the following situations occur :

  In case of physical wear of the element due to constant friction and force applied when closing.

• In case of damage due to impact or incorrect adjustment of the fittings.
• When replacing a window or its individual elements.
• In case of replacing a standard strike plate with a more advanced design.
• In case of breakage of the fasteners fixing the strike plate to the impost.
• When adjusting the position of the locking element for more effective use.

Replacement can also be carried out for preventive purposes, when changing a complete set of fittings. Thus, compatibility of the mushroom or cylindrical pin designs with the grooves of the strip is achieved.

How to do it right?

To replace the strip, you need to perform a few simple operations using the tool listed above:

• The old structure is dismantled by unscrewing all the screws with a screwdriver or screwdriver.
• The new strike plate is compared with the old one to ensure that the location of the mounting holes and dimensions match.
• If all the main elements coincide, provided that the old structure is positioned correctly, the new element is simply fixed with self-tapping screws into the existing holes.
• If it is necessary to mount an element with a different configuration, or with a shift, you should re-mark, drill new holes, and then install the bar in the desired position relative to the trunnion.
• If the holes intersect, before drilling you should use the cold welding method - block the old places for the screws using liquid plastic.

When replacing the clamping strip, you should also take into account that when installing the element without replacing the main part of the fittings on the sash, the dimensions of the grooves for fixing the trunnions must be the same.

1. According to one point of view, window components are those parts that are not directly included in the window structure. That is, this includes only what is not a part of the frame, sash, glass unit or fittings.
2. On the other hand, many window industry experts define window components as a set of elements, the installation of which is possible after the structure has been manufactured/installed. In this case, the list of parts is expanded primarily due to the fittings - if necessary, it can be “upgraded” by adding the necessary parts.

Installing spare parts for plastic windows is not entirely simple, but without dismantling the structure itself. At most, you will have to remove the sash, but if you have the skill, this task does not cause any particular difficulties.

Each manufacturer classifies components for PVC windows as it suits them. Therefore, there is no single system here. And yet, for convenience of description, I will highlight several groups:
