Types of windows
Choosing a plastic window is always difficult: you need to purchase not just a beautiful product, but, above all, a reliable one that is commensurate with the requested functions. It is important to be able to distinguish the desired model from analogues with fewer cameras.
Sectional window
What does a plastic window consist of?
The design of such systems includes the following elements:
- profile;
- glass unit;
- accessories.
Let's look at each of them in more detail:
Profile . It consists of steel components and gives strength to the window. Depending on the model, it has one or more cameras (from 1 to 6). The top of the profile is covered with a layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), commonly referred to as plastic. The parts of the profile connected along the perimeter form a window frame into which a double-glazed window is placed.
Double-glazed window . Occupies about 90% of the area of the entire window structure. It consists of several glasses spaced from each other at a certain interval. This gap is called the double-glazed window chamber. In total, there can be from 1 to 3 such cameras, again, depending on the window model.
Accessories . This design element includes a number of mechanisms aimed at ensuring the opening/closing of a plastic window sash. The mechanism links are located at the ends of the frame and are controlled using a handle.
So, we briefly got acquainted with the main components of a PVC window. Now let's take a closer look at the features of the five-chamber design.
Design specifics.
The concept of a window equipped with five cameras means nothing more than a window whose profile includes 5 cameras. It is the number of cameras that sometimes misleads the inexperienced buyer, or rather their presence in the profile or in the glass unit. These are different things. By the way, unlike five-chamber windows, a five-chamber double-glazed window model simply does not exist today; the possible maximum is only three chambers.
So, the 5-chamber plastic windows have one main one and a number of small air chambers. The main purpose is to give the profile the necessary rigidity. If such a chamber is equipped with a reinforcing plane, the purpose of installing which is to prevent possible deformations, then such a profile is already called metal-plastic. Auxiliary chambers are designed to be responsible for the level of heat and noise insulation.
Today, the most popular window models are those with a profile consisting of three or five chambers. By the way, the number of chambers directly affects the maximum thickness of the double-glazed window - the thicker it is, the better heat and sound insulation abilities it has.
The service life of plastic windows with five chambers with proper care is at least 45 years. The temperature regime at which their operation is envisaged ranges from -60 to +60 degrees Celsius, which will be quite enough for the vast majority of buyers.
In fact, if you install a five-chamber PVC window in an apartment, you can count not only on heat savings, but also on a reduction in the amounts in receipts for heating and electricity. This side of saving will be especially interesting for residents of regions where cold conditions prevail most of the year. According to these indicators, a five-chamber window with an installed three-chamber double-glazed window today provides maximum security for the glazed room.
Important! Three-chamber models with a two-chamber double-glazed window are only slightly inferior to five-chamber designs in terms of noise and heat performance. At the same time, the price of three-chamber plastic windows is much lower than the cost of systems with a large number of cameras.
You can view and compare the characteristics of five-chamber plastic windows from well-known manufacturers of PVC structures by going to the pages with product descriptions of the corresponding brands: Veka, Rehau, Kbe.
What is a 5-chamber double-glazed window?
This type of structure consists of several parts, each of which is responsible for its assigned functions. The presence of several chambers inside one product greatly increases heat and noise insulation. A notable advantage was affordability: this type of window is not particularly more expensive than its thinner counterparts.
What is a 5-chamber profile
The 5-chamber window is an excellent product option with increased technical potential.
Inside the structure there are five hollow chambers filled with air, preventing the negative effects of noise, temperature changes, and icy air flows.
Among all the sections, the central one is the basis of the whole profile, giving rigidity to the entire product, and is made of high-strength material.
On each side of the base there are two additional pockets that provide protective functions.
A visual overview of the section of the 5-chamber modification is shown in the following video:
How is it different from others
Unlike other PVC products, the 5-chamber type involves metal internal reinforcement.
This type of window is preferable for installation in houses located in cold areas with icy winds and frequent precipitation.
The peculiarity of the structure makes it possible to insulate the building even in conditions of extreme cold, where the winds howl loudly and often for a long time, which led to the second need - sound insulation, which is perfectly covered by five sections.
Comparison with other types of windows
Compared to small-chamber models, the noise level is reduced by up to 30%, the temperature inside the room is better maintained, and external cold is not allowed in. Despite the fact that the difference in the final cost is quite small, no more than 15%.
The glass units also differ: the elements are almost a centimeter thicker.
There is reinforcement at the fastener sites, which prevents them from freezing.
Specifications
To date, the number of branches under consideration is considered the maximum.
With five air compartments, the thickness of the glass unit reaches 42 mm, the internal partition – 3 mm, the profiled part – 70 mm. Reinforcement constitutes a closed system.
Technical specifications
Before purchasing, you must carefully study the description of the product: the reinforcement must be made of steel alloy, with a partition density of up to 1.5 mm.
Double-glazed windows for 5-chamber windows
Under such a profile, a double-glazed window is produced, consisting of one, two or three compartments.
Depending on what type of glass is installed, there will be a certain level of security for the home.
All inserts used are sealed, filled with special gases that prevent the glass sheets from sweating from the inside.
The single-chamber variation consists of two glasses with a gas-filled internal space between them. Accordingly, a two-chamber one has three glasses, a three-chamber one has four panels.
The last type of product has the highest insulating qualities, minimizing the negative impact from the outside.
Additionally, plug-in parts are divided into specific groups:
- sound insulation;
- thermal insulation;
- protection;
- tinting;
- decorative addition.
The first option consists of three panels, where the outermost one is 6 mm thick, the middle one is 4 mm, and the inner one is 4 mm thick. The last two are located somewhat closer to each other, helping to reduce noise even when the roadway is close.
The second type is created from special thermal raw materials with a special coating of a mirror coating in the form of silver plating. Used in particularly cold winter conditions.
Different number of double-glazed windows
The third fork is covered with a special film, which significantly increases the overall strength. When subjected to mechanical impact, the glass does not break and does not damage nearby people. Often installed in shops, schools, hotels and the like.
What is a five-chamber profile
Photo: cross-section of a five-chamber profile
Five-chamber windows are the best representative of metal-plastic structures, as they have the highest technical parameters compared to other analogues.
The chambers in the design of a metal-plastic window are hollow sections filled with air, which protects the room from low temperatures and various noises.
Unlike analogues with fewer chambers, in this design the metal reinforcement inside the profile is located further from the hinge attachment points, which blocks the path for the flow of cold air in the most vulnerable places of the window.
A 5-chamber window is a structure of several sections, the central one of which serves as the basis for the profile and ensures the rigidity of the structure.
On the sides of the central section there are two additional chambers, which are responsible for thermal insulation properties and provide protection from noise penetration.
The main section of the five-chamber profile is made of high-strength material, and its presence prevents possible bending and damage to the window structure. Models with five chambers are durable and more practical for installation in residential areas than designs with fewer sections.
What to look for when choosing.
The type of glass unit used . As already mentioned in the article entitled “All about double-glazed windows,” these products are an integral part of the design of a modern window. They can have one or several cameras. Let us remind you that each camera consists of two glasses located at a certain distance from each other. Single-chamber double-glazed windows have the lowest characteristics in terms of heat and noise insulation. The three-chamber double-glazed window model is the most acceptable from the point of view of sound insulation and heat retention in a glazed room. As mentioned above, installing such a solution only makes sense in those areas of the country where it is cold most of the time.
For fittings . In cheap window models, fitting mechanisms from little-known companies may be installed, which have a limited supply of opening/closing options. Therefore, before signing a contract for the supply of windows, it is necessary to select fittings from a well-known global manufacturer. If necessary, you can order anti-burglary fittings and/or child locks.
For the presence of metal reinforcement . There are two types of profile reinforcement - regular steel and “advanced” (extra). It is also necessary to pay attention to the thickness of the metal wall (sometimes from 1.2 to 1.5). The strength characteristics of the profile depend on the selected values.
To the energy efficiency class established by the manufacturer. The manufacturer assigns a specific energy efficiency class to each line of windows, which is responsible for the thermal insulation properties of a specific window model. The class is graded into several categories, usually designated by the letters A and B, where A is the window profile with the highest thermal insulation characteristics. Existing options for classes responsible for energy efficiency: E, D, C, B, A, A+, A++.
For the warranty period . As a rule, self-respecting manufacturers establish a warranty period for the customer of at least five years.
Types of double-glazed windows
In the production of double-glazed windows, sets of glass are used, which are placed at certain fixed distances from each other. The space between the glasses is sealed and separated by special seals along the contour. Based on the type of double-glazed windows, the following types of plastic windows are distinguished:
- single-chamber - consist of two glasses that are separated by a gap;
- two-chamber - a double-glazed window consists of three glasses separated by two air layers;
- three-chamber - consist of four glasses, which are separated by three chambers with air;
- four-chamber - a double-glazed window consists of five glasses separated by four air chambers;
- five-chamber - consist of six glasses, which are separated by five air chambers.
The simplest are single-chamber ones, consisting of two glasses. As a rule, they have rather low sound-proofing and heat-protective properties and are not intended for residential premises. In severe frosts, they may freeze.
The most popular are two-chamber plastic windows, which consist of three glasses of 4, 5 or 6 mm, separated by two air chambers. Their thickness varies between 32-40 mm. The width of the glass separation can also be different. The wider it is, the more pronounced the properties of such windows are to insulate from street noise and retain heat, since it is the air layers, and not glass, that are sound and heat insulators. Sometimes, to increase the tightness of a double-glazed window, the air space between the glasses is somewhat discharged. A double-chamber double-glazed window is more expensive than a single-chamber one. But despite this, it is more popular. The fact is that the energy savings achieved after installing such a window can be felt quite quickly.
There are also 3-chamber ones, but the need for them may arise only in severe frost conditions and with a high noise level outside the window. According to these criteria, they are superior to two-chamber ones. However, not enough sunlight penetrates through such a window.
Double-glazed windows for a five-chamber window
For a five-chamber profile, there are three types of double-glazed windows:
- single-chamber;
- two-chamber;
- three-chamber.
The level of thermal insulation of the window and its noise protection characteristics primarily depend on this or that type of double-glazed window installed. All double-glazed windows are sealed and filled with a special gas that prevents the glass from sweating from the inside.
A single-chamber double-glazed window consists of two layers of glass, each of which is 4 mm thick, and the total thickness of the double-glazed window is 24 mm. It provides low protection against noise and cold penetration into the room and is usually installed on balconies or in office premises.
A double-glazed window with two chambers includes three layers of glass with the same width as its single-chamber counterpart. It is able to provide good sound insulation and reliably protect the room from the penetration of cold. It is recommended to install double-glazed windows in apartments or country houses.
The design of a three-chamber double-glazed window consists of four glasses. The thickness of each can be from 4 to 6 mm, and the total thickness of the glass unit is 40 mm. Such a double-glazed window provides the best protection from cold and noise and is relevant in harsh climatic conditions.
In addition to all of the above, all double-glazed windows for five-chamber window profiles are divided into several categories:
- soundproofing;
- energy saving;
- protective;
- double-glazed window with tinting;
- decorative.
The noise-insulating double-glazed window has three glasses, the first of which is 6 mm thick and is located on the outside, and the other 2 glasses are 4 mm thick and are located close to each other on the inside of the window. It provides an increased level of noise insulation and is often installed on the side of the room where the roadway is located.
The energy-saving design is made of special thermal glass, on which a special mirror coating is applied using vacuum spraying of silver particles. This double-glazed window provides a high level of thermal insulation and is installed in regions where low temperatures prevail.
The glass of the protective glass unit is covered with a special film, which provides them with good strength characteristics. Thanks to the film, the glass will not shatter if broken and will not harm people nearby. Due to their increased strength, such double-glazed windows are most often installed in store windows, in hotels, children's and educational institutions.
The tinted glass unit is covered with a tinting film that protects the room from strong sunlight. It is installed on the sunny side of buildings and prevents the constant penetration of sunlight into the room.
Decorative glass design has curved or decorated glass that gives the room an unusual and beautiful look. Such double-glazed windows do not have any special characteristics and are used for installation in restaurants and entertainment venues.
Types of windows according to the method of opening the sashes
According to the method of opening the sashes, the following types of plastic windows are distinguished:
- with rotary (vertical) opening;
- with folding (horizontal) opening;
- with tilt-and-turn opening (in two planes);
- deaf, motionless (does not open);
- with a hinged opening (both doors open into a single opening - there is no vertical partition).
Blind ones can be used to create stained glass windows, since such systems have the integrity of a panoramic view. A fixed window can be part of a two- or three-hung structure. Usually installed on the first floors or in openings opening onto balconies. Sometimes such windows are used as additional transparent office partitions. The disadvantage of such a system is the inconvenience of washing from the outside, and a significant advantage is the relatively low cost.
With a rotating opening, they are systems with a sash that rotates vertically and can open outward or inward. Such systems are cheaper than tilt-and-turn systems, but they are also less convenient to use.
Single-chamber plastic window
Tilt and turn systems open in vertical and horizontal planes. This is the most common design option and allows the window to be used in ventilation mode with the tilting function. In the cool season, a gap of 3-10 cm wide is installed in this system, facilitating the flow of fresh air. This mode eliminates the appearance of drafts.
Folding (fanlight) doors can be used in rooms where open doors can get in the way (staircases, basements, etc.). Sometimes they are installed in schools and kindergartens. Such systems are convenient for ventilation and safe for children.
With a hinged opening, they are ideal for rooms where you need to save useful space. They are used primarily for glazing loggias and balconies and open in folding, retractable and sliding positions (the sashes, thanks to complementary profiles, can close on each other). Multi-hung windows consist mainly of two or three sashes of the same or different types. When the window opening is 2 meters or more wide, three-leaf systems with identical side sashes are usually installed.
An important element of the window is the fittings, on which the operation of the moving mechanisms of the structure depends. You need to choose the type of fittings based on the purpose of the window. For balconies, fittings with an anti-burglary mechanism are better suited. You can choose decorative fittings that will suit the design of the room. If there are small children in the house, it is better to use fittings with a lock that prevents the child from opening the window independently.
There are two types of profiles based on thermal insulation properties: “A” and “B”. For residential premises, a class “A” profile is used, which is better in its thermal insulation.
Which window design is more suitable for you is up to you to decide. Some three-chamber windows may have higher technical characteristics than five-chamber windows. Much depends on the manufacturer, technology and materials.
Advantages of a plastic window with five chambers
When using the phrase “five-chamber window,” you need to clearly understand which cameras you are talking about. In this case, we mean the number of cameras in the profile (remember, a double-glazed window has not five, but a maximum of three cameras). What advantages does such intimacy give to the window?
Due to the fact that the thermal conductivity of the profile decreases in proportion to the number of chambers, the main positive property of such structures is improved heat retention in the adjacent room. Visually evaluate the differences between a three-chamber profile and a five-chamber one:
The low thermal conductivity of the profile is especially important for plastic windows installed in residential buildings in regions where cold weather reigns most of the year. The increased thermal insulation capabilities of a 5-chamber profile, in comparison with, say, a three-chamber profile, allow owners to significantly save on paying bills for electricity consumed by household electric heaters.
The presence of additional chambers significantly affects the cost of the final product - the price of plastic windows with a profile of five chambers is significantly higher than, for example, the price of PVC structures with a profile of three chambers.
Recommendations for purchase
First of all, you need to pay attention to the condition of the metal base - the stronger the frame, the stronger the entire structure.
It is important that the core is square in shape to distribute the incoming load evenly, providing all-round support for the entire profile.
It happens that manufacturers lay down a U-shaped skeleton, which is often not enough to provide the required qualities. It also quickly loses its working condition.
It is recommended to request a cross-sectional sample of the product from representatives of the window company. The more readily the seller provides all the necessary information, the better.
Location of the reinforcing contour
Be sure to examine the accessories included in the package. The fastening elements must freely switch between modes, firmly fixing the sash.
We must not forget about the sealant, which should not be too hard or peeling. The lower the production parameters, the more drafts will occur later.
Think carefully about how many cameras you actually need before you start paying.
Advantages and disadvantages
Five-chamber products have many advantages.
- Excellent heat and sound insulation properties. In winter, they perfectly protect against the penetration of cold air, and in summer - from hot air, keeping the room cool.
- High structural strength, increased protection against burglary.
- Long service life. Many manufacturers promise up to 40 years of service.
- Possibility of use in different climatic zones. The products can withstand temperatures from -50 to +50 C.
- Resistance to static load.
- Possibility to choose the shape and size, method of opening the window.
- Easy to care for. The products do not need painting, they do not need to be insulated for winter.
- Universal design. They go well with different curtains (both fabric and blinds or roller ones).
To install an expensive structure, it is advisable to turn to reliable manufacturers who have been operating on the market for a long time. Some offer the added benefit of being able to choose the type of glass. There are several options:
- Thermal glass with a special mirror coating. The top layer is applied by vacuum spraying of silver particles. The reflective effect promotes increased heat retention. Such glass is appropriate in regions with very cold winters.
- Glass coated with a special film that increases strength. Under strong mechanical stress, the glass will become covered with a network of cracks, but fragments will not fall out of it. The inability of this type of glass to cause injury makes it suitable for children's institutions and store displays.
- Tinted glass. A special tinting coating protects the room from bright ultraviolet radiation. Such glass is appropriate on the south side of the building, which is exposed to sunlight throughout the day.
Also, some manufacturers provide the opportunity to choose the shade of the profile if white does not suit the style of the interior.
However, with all their obvious advantages, five-chamber double-glazed windows also have some disadvantages:
- they cost more;
- during installation, such a double-glazed window reduces the width of the window sill, which creates inconvenience;
- you should select high-quality, often expensive fittings, which are needed to close the window tightly, secure the hinges and prevent drafts between the sashes;
- you should carefully consider the configuration of the window, the ratio of movable and fixed blocks (a solid structure may be inaccessible for washing from the outside).
You should also remember that there should be no gaps in the frames. If present, they will negate all positive properties. You shouldn’t skimp on seals either. Their quality directly affects the tightness of the window when closing and the fixation of the glass in the profile.
additional characteristics
A five-chamber window profile may have additional features. This includes a high degree of noise insulation, energy saving, protection against burglary and ultraviolet rays.
The systems acquire the ability to save energy through the use of special glasses. UV protection is achieved by applying a special tinting film to the glass, and resistance to mechanical stress is achieved through an anti-vandal coating.
There are varieties with curved and decorated glass, but they are rarely found on sale and are often made to order.
Profile color selection
Most buyers of five-chamber plastic windows are satisfied with the white profile. The advantage of this choice is obvious: white color fits almost any interior. However, some people who want to create a certain style in their room are, for some reason, not always satisfied with the standard window color. In this case, you can consider installing a light-transmitting structure with a profile of a different color than white.
If the window is already installed, you can use paint and repaint the profile yourself in the desired color. However, if you are just planning to purchase a PVC system, it makes sense to buy plastic windows that are already colored.
Modern technologies make it possible to give the structure profile a specific color (of your choice) by applying a special film to its surface. This process is called lamination or laminating. Its essence is as follows:
First, the profile is thoroughly cleaned. The machine then applies a laminating film to its surface under pressure. The applied film material is considered to be of high quality if it does not contain bubbles or various types of inclusions in the places of application.
The color of the future plastic window with five chambers is always chosen by the buyer at the stage of ordering the design. To more accurately determine the shade, as a rule, the RAL color catalog is used. This publication must be present in any self-respecting company selling such color systems.
Specifications
Five sections in a metal-plastic window are the limit today. Standard five-chamber designs have the following characteristics:
- Air compartments – 5 pcs.;
- The thickness of the internal partition is 3mm;
- The thickness of the glass unit is 42mm;
- Profile thickness – 70mm;
- Closed reinforcement system.
When choosing a plastic window with five air sections, it is very important to pay attention to the reinforcement system. It must be made of steel alloy and have a partition thickness of up to 1.5 mm.
The right approach to choosing a profile
The five-chamber profile is better in all respects than the three-chamber design, but such windows are not always relevant for installation. It all depends on the weather conditions in which the windows will be used. If the room is located far from the roadway or any other sources of strong noise, and the climatic conditions are quite favorable for living, then a three-chamber window with a single or double-glazed window is suitable.
If the room is located close to the roadway, as well as not far from a field, where there may be strong winds and low temperatures, then the best option would be to install a five-chamber window with a two- or three-chamber double-glazed window.
Which profile to choose: single-chamber or three-chamber?
Five-chamber systems are superior to analogues with three sections in all respects, but their installation is not always advisable. Firstly, such designs are quite heavy, and secondly, their price tag is 18-20% higher than the cost of standard products with three chambers. So which variety should you buy?
When choosing a window unit, rely on the natural conditions of your area and the specifics of the environment. If the climate is close to harsh, and there is a noisy highway outside the window, then options with 5 cameras are ideal for you.
Three-chamber systems are quite suitable for operation at average temperatures (up to -25 degrees). If there is no need for improved sound insulation of the block, standard options are preferable.
Selecting a double-glazed window
A modern double-glazed window has the following design differences:
- number of glasses;
- types of glass.
1. The number of glasses in a double-glazed plastic window varies from 2 to 4. Let us remind you that two glasses form one chamber, respectively, the maximum number of chambers in a double-glazed window is three. What benefits does the presence of additional glass provide to the design?
Selecting the number of sashes
When choosing a suitable window model, you need to pay attention to its sashes. The appearance from the window, as well as ease of use, will depend on their number.
If the room where the light-transmitting structure is supposed to be installed has a large window opening, then it would be more advisable to install a three-leaf plastic window, with sashes located at the edges of the system and having a rotary opening. In this case, the central part of the structure remains blind (non-openable). This solution is optimal both in terms of functionality (two doors, compared to one, ventilate the room much more efficiently), and in terms of capabilities associated with providing care for the glass surface (wiping it, washing it, etc.).
An alternative to the previous option, with three sashes, is to install a double-leaf window, in which one sashes can be opened, and the other, larger in size, is completely blind. When choosing such a system, you should carefully weigh the pros and cons, since cleaning the outside of the glass will present certain difficulties.
It is also worth considering that if the window opening is adjacent to the balcony, then to ensure better illumination of the room, you should opt for a light-transmitting structure without sashes, and order a balcony door with floor-length glass.
With standard opening sizes, owners, as a rule, install solutions equipped with two identical-sized doors, one of which is blind. In rare cases, you can find a single-hung window. However, when planning to purchase such a system, you need to remember that if the window sash is opened frequently, it may stop functioning properly due to sagging due to its heavy weight.
Let's sum it up
When choosing window systems, cost always plays a big role. The price tag depends on the capabilities of the system and the manufacturer. For example, a five-chamber Rehau profile with basic characteristics will have a price tag of 6,000 rubles for a standard double-leaf window. At the same time, products with a triple profile can be purchased for 3000-4500 rubles.
If you want to install a unit with maximum energy efficiency and UV protection, expect to pay 20% more. The maximum price tag is for varieties with anti-vandal coating and decorative treatment. Designs with non-standard parameters can also cost an order of magnitude more.
You can also purchase cheaper options from Chinese manufacturers, but the quality and durability of such products remain in question.
Selection of accessories
The fitting mechanism in the window design is responsible for opening the sashes. The fittings include, among other things, a window handle. Today, the Russian market is ready to offer the end buyer a huge range of fitting mechanisms to choose from that meet all requirements both in terms of color and cost, as well as functionality.
Currently, plastic structures are equipped with fittings from various manufacturers, the world leaders of which are:
- Siegenia-aubi;
- Maco;
- Roto;
- Winkhaus;
- Schuco.
In most cases, five-chamber window models contain only high-quality fittings from well-known brands. This fact is directly reflected in the final price of the products, naturally upward. What are the advantages of expensive fittings, usually produced in Germany, over cheaper analogues manufactured, for example, in Turkey and China?
In good window fittings, the number of openings/closings guaranteed by the manufacturer is at least 50,000, while the guaranteed life cycle of mechanisms from little-known companies is only 20,000. In addition, expensive fittings are easy to use - the ergonomics of the handle and the smoothness of its movement.
On the domestic window market, you can often find fitting mechanisms designed to provide a certain type of protection. These include anti-burglary and locking devices.
The purpose of anti-burglary fittings is to block the window from opening from the outside. The functions of the locking mechanisms are reduced to preventing children from opening the window sash without permission.
