Polyurethane platbands - lightness, practicality, ease of installation

Polyurethane platbands - lightness, practicality, ease of installation

Platbands for windows and doors are one of the most important elements in decorating the facade of a building. It is noteworthy, but in the old days their role was much more prosaic and consisted of covering the junction of the frame structure and the wall panel. Practical and unremarkable. Who, for the first time, decided to make decorative elements out of them, history is silent. But the fact that this invention is no less brilliant than the invention of the wheel is a fact.

About platbands in general and polyurethane stucco molding in particular

So, platbands. At different times, the materials for their manufacture were: wood, stone, concrete, gypsum. With the development of new technologies, an excellent alternative has emerged - polyurethane. Easy to process, not requiring additional maintenance costs, easy to install, it has rapidly supplanted its “competitors” and is a recognized favorite in the building materials market. In particular, Europlast stucco molding is quite popular on the domestic market. By the way, you can buy it in our online store, and at a very interesting price.

Unlike natural materials, polyurethane stucco is more practical. In addition to high heat resistance and excellent adhesion, it is not afraid of moisture, and is not susceptible to ultraviolet radiation. In general, by installing a platband made of foamed polystyrene, you solve several issues at once: you don’t need to maintain it, you don’t need to hire professionals, and financing the project won’t require additional effort. As for practical implementation. There is generally complete order here. Since polyurethane is easy to process, you can safely experiment with the facade.

The choice of the structure of the platband depends on the aesthetic wishes of the client. Do you want to make a marble-like coating, no, pay attention to the texture of the wood. If you don’t like anything, you can order an exclusive option, for example, figured cutting. At the same time, the cost of the final product will not change much, since the production of polyurethane is a fairly simple process. Thanks to this, both pensioners and “pioneers” can buy stucco, but the working and middle class, both will be satisfied with the price and content.

Describing the advantages of polyurethane platbands, I would like to draw attention to their relevance in our climatic conditions. Namely, in the winter, when severe frosts give way to thaws, we cannot find a more reliable and durable material. Even ardent opponents of everything new and artificial are forced to admit its superiority and phenomenal endurance. Therefore, the popularity of polyurethane is fully justified, and the possibilities for its practical implementation are constantly expanding.

And one more “plus”

While describing the polyurethane casing as a decorative element, we missed one important point, which is a fairly compelling argument in view of the events of recent years.

Having a dense structure, polyurethane practically does not allow heat to pass through. This property will be very useful for zealous owners. By sealing the gaps between the frame and the wall, we get an additional barrier against the scorching heat and freezing cold. Thus, a material that supposedly harms the environment allows you to save energy resources, making a serious contribution to the conservation of green spaces and blue rivers.

To summarize, I would like to say a huge thank you to the creators of polyurethane stucco molding and thank them once again for a unique product that has positively changed our lives and continues to make it even more beautiful.

Polyurethane trims for windows

Platbands for windows and doors are one of the most important elements in decorating the facade of a building.

It is noteworthy, but in the old days their role was much more prosaic and consisted of covering the junction of the frame structure and the wall panel. Practical and unremarkable.

Window framing, materials and prices. The framing of plastic windows can consist of sandstones, platbands, arches, and keystones. Polyurethane framing elements are a relatively inexpensive and practical way to decorate a window. The ability to create various interesting window design options from polyurethane allows you to maintain a certain façade style. In addition, with the help of platbands you can visually expand or lengthen window openings. Window frames made of polyurethane are easy to install and easy to maintain; they are not subject to corrosion, mildew, or mold. Such elements are durable, do not crack, do not wear out and last a long time. Polyurethane can be coated with materials of various colors and textures: paints, plasters, decorative compounds. Polyurethane window framing is affordable for almost any budget, which makes it possible to use this design in homes for various purposes. Let's consider the elements characteristic of the classic decoration of a window opening. The platband, which is created in accordance with the order and other decorative elements of the facade, surrounds the window on three or four sides. The width of the platband is selected approximately equal to 1/6 of the width of the window. One of the options for framing a polyurethane window is a semicircular frame or arch. An archivolt is placed above the arch. You can choose a rectangular platband to decorate a semi-circular window (“Bramante window” - such a frame was proposed by the architect Bramante in the 16th century). The frame of plastic windows can be made in the form of pilasters or semi-columns, above which there is a horizontal cornice, pediment, sandrik. Under the window you can place a horizontal protrusion in the form of a plank or pedestal. Side trims or pilasters support consoles and balustrades. Since the framing of plastic windows largely determines the appearance of the facade, in your choice it is worth focusing on the products of well-known companies. The Europlast company, which creates stucco molding from polyurethane and framing, among other manufacturers, offers a large selection of various products that can decorate the facade of a house in a historical style. In the catalog on our website you can choose any option for framing plastic windows, allowing you to maintain the classic design of the facade. Elements for window framing and prices can be found on the website and from the company’s managers.

The facade of a house is not only the finishing of the front part of the building, but also the side and rear load-bearing or enclosing walls of the building. The street, courtyard and main facades are distinguished separately.

This attention is due to the importance of architectural decor for a building, as well as a huge number of options for its solution, depending on the structural, stylistic and functional loads.

Facade decor directly depends on the topography of the building, as well as on the choice of the type of division.

All elements of facade decor used in architecture can be divided into two large groups:

  • mainly for horizontal division
  • mainly for vertical division

Main types of façade division

  1. Horizontal division of the facade - used to give a visual impression of solidity and stability. This division is recommended for buildings with a long facade and low number of storeys.

    Example of horizontal façade design

  2. Vertical division. The purpose of vertical division is to visually lighten the façade and create the impression of “upward direction.” This type of division is recommended for tall multi-story buildings with a short facade.

    Example of vertical façade design

The combined use of two groups of materials for finishing facades makes it possible to achieve bright architectural expressiveness and unique design of your country house or cottage.

Examples of the architectural facade of a house or cottage

The group of architectural details of the facade with horizontal division includes:

  • all types of belts (pulls)
  • fillets
  • cornices
  • friezes
  • consoles
  • shelves
  • grooves
  • architrave

Also sometimes this group includes window sills and window/door ceilings.

Architectural elements of facade decor for vertical division include:

  • columns
  • pilasters
  • piers
  • window and door openings (their height almost always dominates the width, which creates visual “breaks” in the building).

When deciding on decorating the facade of a future building, you should pay attention to the purpose and location of the building. In an urban multi-storey building, vertical axes and, accordingly, vertical division elements predominate.

The decor of cottage facades is not limited by anything other than artistic requirements. Existing vertical axes require special attention. A visible axis on the facade will make a better impression on the beholder and make it possible to hide design flaws.

Materials for architectural decoration of the facade are very diverse:

  • stone
  • siding
  • cladding panels
  • plaster
  • brick

A variety of stucco moldings, tiles, and painting are also widely used in the design of the facade of a house.

  1. Stone is one of the oldest materials for cladding facades. In addition to natural ones (marble, limestone, granite, etc.), artificial types of stone are now widely used, primarily the so-called “white stone” - architectural concrete with internal reinforcement. Most often, stone is used to decorate various openings (windows, doors, balustrades, rustications...), but there are also hanging panels with bas-reliefs made of natural stone.
  2. Siding is horizontal facing panels. There are cement, vinyl, metal (including steel) and wood.
  3. Cladding panels - most often used if there is not enough money to cover the facade with facing bricks. They are used as finishing in new buildings and in the restoration of old ones. They often have an additional insulation function.
  4. Plaster is one of the simplest means of artistic solution to facade design.
Plasters are: - mineral - polymer - structural - pebble - mosaic decorative - "bark beetle" type
  5. Facing brick is also called facade or front brick. Unlike ordinary (construction) bricks, facing bricks are available in various colors, textures and shapes. When decorating a facade with such bricks, you don’t have to paint or plaster the wall.
  6. Stucco molding is a decorative element for finishing facades. Stucco molding can be: 1.
“heavy”: - from stone (including artificial) - from plaster - from concrete2. “light”: - polystyrene - fiberglass - polyurethane - polymer concrete

Advantages of heavy and light facade decor

“Heavy” façade decor is usually more effective and durable, but requires strong walls and foundations. It is almost impossible to “adjust” it to the installation location

Stucco decoration made from polyurethane, polystyrene and other modern materials is cheap, easy to install, but requires additional processing and is not nearly as durable as “heavy” ones.

Optimal choice

Polyurethane facade decor is considered the most optimal.

Its main advantages are:

  1. light weight
  2. does not require additional treatment against moisture
  3. dense
  4. easy to install (the owner can do it himself)

Interfloor molding

Recently, as a decorative element, the so-called “moldings” are often classified as a separate group - overhead convex strips with cross sections that serve to decorate walls, ceilings, arches, doors, etc. Interfloor moldings help zone surfaces and give them a finished look.

Methods for designing openings deserve a separate discussion, such as:

  • window and door frames (including narrow frames)
  • window sills
  • crowns
  • cornices

Decoration of windows and openings

As you know, it is the openings and their design that have a huge impact on the facade as a whole. Thus, in buildings with a predominance of the horizontal direction (large internal space, large distances between the axes of windows and other openings), one should try to strengthen the vertical division, and in buildings with a predominance of the vertical, horizontal division.

For a window opening to have a beautiful appearance, its height must be at least one and a half times the width and no more than double. Therefore, methods for finishing window openings are usually divided into:

  • framing only by a circular casing with or without ears
  • framing with platband only on the sides and top of the window; the lower part is represented by a freely ending window sill
  • the window sill is part of an independent window sill wall; the window rests on a pedestal
  • a window topped with a sash.

Window frame made of polyurethane - advantages

The first (main) advantage is the original design.

Almost no other material for decorative framing of windows and doors has such variability and the ability to combine various components. Here you can create compositions from moldings and cornices, arches and rustications, rosettes, consoles and keystones; you can “play” with the length of elements, the distances between them, patterns of alternation, color and style.

The ability to cut any decorative elements in any place and at any angle without compromising quality, easy assembly of stucco molding allows you to create individual compositions from finished elements or their parts. For greater expressiveness, you can use individual stucco details with small patterns - bas-reliefs, rosettes, panels, door trims. The result is a truly exclusive frame for a door or window, one of a kind, since the designer’s imagination is limited solely by the size of the opening and the financial capabilities of the customer.

The second advantage is the durability of polyurethane stucco molding and its ability to hold its shape even for small artistic detailing.

Indeed, the ease of care and durability of polyurethane products can hardly be overestimated. Facade decor made from it is not afraid of snow, rain, or frost; it can be washed with both ordinary water and detergents. Frames of windows and doors made of polyurethane on the facade of the house do not need to be restored, like wooden decor - it is enough to paint it and it will look like new. As for durability, the service life of polyurethane stucco is comparable to the service life of a building - more than 25 years.

The third advantage is ease of installation.

As you know, polyurethane stucco is very easy to process. It can be sawed, cut, drilled, and glued. Therefore, the installation of frames for openings is greatly simplified. Elements - door and window frames, sandstones, rusticated stones and so on can be put together almost like a mosaic; they just need to be fastened together and fixed to the load-bearing surface with glue and self-tapping screws: the decor will hold firmly.

Another advantage is the lightness of polyurethane stucco.

Due to its low weight, it can be attached to any flat surface, including plastered walls and houses of lightweight construction (for example, those made using frame technology). Stucco molding is also convenient to work with: even large decorative trims and moldings can be lifted by installers without the use of special equipment, and this is a direct reduction in the costs of construction work. Polyurethane window casings – World of Glazing

How to install plastic trim on windows: varieties, finishing, do-it-yourself installation. Plastic windows, or rather their finishing, are regulated by certain standards.

If you look at the preliminary work, pay attention to GOST 30971. So you can see with your own eyes how to properly finish the window perimeter, in which places you should use anchor plates and why you need to use a vapor barrier membrane.

If you adhere to these standards, you have a guarantee that the structure will not succumb to the force of the wind, the mounting foam will not crumble, and the frame will not be left without support. By the way, most of the controversy arises precisely on the topic of fastening, not finishing. If we talk about finishing work, then everything is almost the same.

Types of plastic platbands for windows

Plastic windows are reliable and functional products. But sometimes, when a window is installed at the same level as the wall, it becomes necessary to refine the joint between the wall and the window frame. Even with high-quality installation, the joint will always remain. This problem can be solved by finishing with platbands for plastic windows.

Functions

The main function is to connect two mating surfaces so that the wall and window have a complete look. In addition, the casing covers the connecting seam from negative factors and their effects: direct UV rays, moisture. To some extent, the casing even protects against temperature changes, but this depends on the material from which it is made.

The last function is purely decorative, although for some it comes first. But this also largely depends on the shape and material.

Varieties

The most common option is flat. This is a popular and budget option, the advantage of which is that they are easy to install and manufacture. If you do not need any frills in terms of decoration, then these trims will be ideal for you.

This variety, such as profiled platbands, differs from flat ones in the presence of a convexity of a certain shape on the outside. This surface can be on both a symmetrical and asymmetrical profile. Sometimes a profile has not only a curved surface, but also corners. With a complex, combined look, roundness and angles will be combined. Shaped-type platbands have a relief on the outside.

Please note that the relief on the surface can be complex, and the platbands themselves can be made of wood or PVC with wood imitation.

And finally, carved platbands are a work of art that are made from any material, in particular wood. But they do not always combine beautifully with plastic windows and do not fit into the style.

Platbands on doors and windows

Stucco molding → Articles → Articles about stucco molding

The first image that comes to people’s minds with the word “platbands” is the windows of a Russian wooden house: lace, white or carved trims can be seen everywhere on them. The platband got its name due to the fact that it is most noticeable on the face of the house or on the facade of the building. Contrary to popular belief, the platband can act not only as a traditional decorative decoration of Russian huts, but also as an important architectural element of the facade of any house.

Why do we need trims on doors and windows?

Platbands frame windows and doors, closing the gap between the wall and the door or window opening. Why is it so important to remove this gap between the window (door) and the wall? First of all, this is necessary to insulate a door or window; you must admit, it’s unpleasant when heat escapes from the house to the outside in winter. And, of course, this is necessary to decorate the facade of the building.

The function of the platband in the interior is, by and large, aesthetic, because most often the renovation of houses and apartments is not done flawlessly, and the gaps that remain between door frames and walls need to be covered with something, this is where the platband appears, which turns out to be a good help for design of door and window openings.

Polyurethane platbands for the facade of the house. Pros and cons

When decorating a façade, the platband must not only be visually attractive, but also withstand all weather conditions—temperature changes in the first place. In summer, given the climate of central Russia, façade elements can heat up to +45°C, and in winter their temperature can be down to -30°C. It turns out that the architectural elements on the facade are subject to changes of 85 degrees. Therefore, the material from which the casing is made must withstand not only wind, hail, snow and rain, but also colossal temperature fluctuations. The material has no right to crack and should not crumble.

The trims on windows and doors are most often made up of cornices, moldings, and sandriks. In this case, the materials that are usually used for the manufacture of facade elements (MDF, plywood, wood) should no longer be used. All wooden elements on the facade will soon turn black; if moisture gets in, then when they freeze, they will crack, and the paint will peel off, and after a few years you will have to replace the wooden trims.

Wooden huts that have carved platbands are well aware of this problem. Repairing wooden frames is very expensive and not profitable. Many may argue that milling and machine sawing of patterns have appeared; this significantly reduces the cost of decorating the facade of a hut, but the main problem for owners of houses with carved platbands remains the replacement of facade elements and the frequency of facade repairs.

However, wooden platbands are used quite often in the interior, but they can still crack if the air is too dry.

Gypsum facade decoration has its own difficulties: a feature of this material is the absorption of water vapor from the air - hygroscopicity. When the temperature changes, the absorbed moisture freezes and then thaws, which leads to the destruction of the material, which means it gradually destroys the architectural element of the facade.

With such façade elements as glass fiber reinforced concrete and polymer concrete, there are no problems with hygroscopicity, and when the temperature changes, if they expand (contract), it is extremely insignificant. But here another question arises - the weight of the architectural elements of these materials. For each project it is necessary to calculate the load on the facade; not all walls can withstand heavy architectural elements.

Polyurethane platbands, in principle, like all facade decor made of polyurethane foam, have an additional advantage over other materials.

Polyurethane has a low heat transfer coefficient for insulating buildings, which means that polyurethane platbands will perform, first of all, an insulating function, without “forgetting” the aesthetic one. Another advantage of polyurethane is its low weight, comparable only to wood.

Because of this, it is so often attached to the facade. We present a rich collection of door decor made of polyurethane, which includes cornices and moldings from different profiles; you can create a platband of your choice.

Framing windows and doors with polyurethane stucco molding

Polyurethane frames - advantages
For your convenience

Nowadays, designers and builders have at their disposal quite a lot of ways to make the frames of windows and doors on the side of the facade of a house or building neat and aesthetically pleasing.

For example, the easiest way is to use plastic panels and profiles. It turns out cheap, practical, neat, but quite standard and faceless.

Another option is wooden decor. It looks beautiful and extraordinary, but requires careful and constant care, moreover, such window framing is expensive and short-lived, since wooden decor can crack from exposure to precipitation or the activity of bacteria and insects.

An alternative to wooden decor can be carved platbands made of moisture-resistant wood composite, but the classic architectural style requires other shapes and proportions. In the classical style, until recently, to frame windows and doors on the side of the facade of the house with stucco, heavy decor was used, which requires additional work to prepare the building for decoration and not all walls can withstand the heavy weight of stucco.

There are other ways to design openings, but, in our opinion, façade framing of windows and doors using decorative trims and other elements made of polyurethane is the best option both in terms of operational characteristics and in terms of original design and compliance with the classical architectural style.
