Plastic platbands for windows: types, for external and internal decoration, installation

Positive qualities of plastic platbands

  • Availability and low cost . Polymer materials used to make plastic platbands are much cheaper than metal or wood. Modern processing technologies significantly reduce the cost of the process. For example, the final cost of products made by extrusion will be noticeably less than that of milled wooden decor.
  • Features of plastic . The strength characteristics of PVC or polyurethane (the most common materials for manufacturing) are sufficient for the loads to which the platbands are subjected. The service life, as a rule, is at least 50 years, while functionality and appearance are almost completely preserved.
  • Appearance. Plastic is made mainly in white or dark brown, but it is possible to pigment the polymer in other colors. It is possible to cover the profile with a textured film that imitates valuable wood, metal or stone.

This allows you to frame the block in harmony with any stylistic decisions of the interior or facade of the building.

  • Easy to care for . PVC platbands are easy to clean and do not require periodic painting or any specific maintenance, such as wooden products.
  • Weather resistance . The casing, made of polymer, is not subject to deformation when used in conditions of high humidity or with regular temperature changes.
  • Light weight . Even products made from a monolithic profile have less weight than wooden or metal counterparts. This makes installation easier and reduces the load on load-bearing elements.
  • Possibility of hidden laying of communications . Some modifications of the casing consist of a lower profile and a front cover. The void between these two parts can be used to accommodate wiring.

There are no significant shortcomings. Basically, people refuse to use plastic because of a prejudiced attitude towards this material or its too low price, inappropriate for the status of the building.

What are they and their functions

These are special parts made from different materials that allow you to solve several main problems at once:

  1. Eliminate the possibility of a draft through the opening that is formed when installing a window between the frame itself and the wall.
  2. They also allow you to solve the decorative problem.

At the same time, such accessories are very convenient to install, and they are also easy to care for; periodically it is enough to simply wash the surface.

Varieties

Plastic trims vary depending on the design, material, manufacturing technology, installation method and location. In addition, there is a difference between products for different types of windows: what is suitable for PVC glazing will not always be in harmony with a wooden window or door.

For plastic windows

Typically, these are plain products of white or dark brown color, made of sheet plastic. The main requirement for such cashing is compliance with the appearance of the building and covering the installation joints.

For wooden windows

For window blocks, special frames are produced from wood that fully imitate the most common types of wood. In addition to the external similarity, such products have the appropriate texture, which makes the platband material visually practically indistinguishable from the imitated original.

External and internal

More durable and massive products are installed on the street side of the building than on the inside. An important quality is the resistance of the coating to ultraviolet radiation and other atmospheric influences. Both from the outside and from the inside, the platband must completely cover the installation seam, correspond to the design of the slopes, the interior of the room and the overall design of the building.

What materials are they made from?

It is worth noting that today protective parts can be made from different components.

The most common are the following:

  1. PVC casing.
  2. Polyurethane.
  3. Tree.
  4. Metal.
  5. Aluminum.

In order to pay attention to a certain option, it is worth taking into account the peculiarities of a particular basis.

Plastic

Despite the fact that PVC platband for windows is very popular, it has both disadvantages and advantages. In particular, this option can be quite simply matched to the design of the entire house, and it is also easy to install, maintain and maintain, and the cost is low.

But there is also a minus. Experts concluded based on the use of plastic structures that the model for designing a slope is not durable.

Each manufacturer of plastic structures offers not only the main parts for installation, but also additional accessories made of plastic in different colors. The most popular is white, but you can try and find painted material.

Made from polyurethane

Polyurethane structures are also not so rarely used to decorate the opening. Profiles can have a wide variety of relief shapes. The advantages of such parts are that they are lightweight and easy to adjust to size. Installation is almost always done on the window opening itself.

Also, the advantages of finishing structures are that during installation they withstand exposure to sunlight and moisture. Therefore, such options will not change their appearance for a long time and will please the eye.

Also, many choose decoration accessories made from this material only because they are easy and simple to repaint. At the same time, when painted, polyurethane models are distinguished by their high ability to withstand negative external influences.

Wooden

If we talk about the classic design of a window opening from the street side, then installing platbands on windows involves the use of wooden models. It demonstrates durability and reliability, but only if it is pre-treated with special compounds.

But you should be prepared for the fact that the cost of such options is much higher.

At the same time, wooden models are made in the original carved style. Suitable for a building made in a classic, original design.

The disadvantage of wooden products is that they need to be painted more often than polyurethane ones, since natural wood is subject to fading.

Installation example

Installation of the plastic platband is carried out either using mounting components (nails, screws, glue, etc.) or using latches provided by the profile design. Installation with double-sided tape is also possible, but this option is not reliable (strong winds can tear off the slats), so it is used extremely rarely, mainly as a temporary solution.

Installation on fasteners involves the following procedure:

  • Window block measurement. To the height of the opening you need to add two widths of the platband (one if the ebb is installed below). Similar calculations are performed for the block width.
  • Once the dimensions of the parts have been calculated, cutting begins. The most common cutting method is at an angle of 45°. The platband adjusted in this way can be joined along the entire perimeter of the block. For convenience, use a special device (miter box); if it is not there, markings are made with a square.

  • After cutting, there should be two cuts at 45° on the horizontal part, and one on the vertical parts (the posts are cut on both sides if the block is cashed around the entire perimeter).

The cut profile is fixed starting from the top part.

Holes for fasteners are drilled in the platband, the plank is applied to the wall, and the wall is marked through the drilled holes. In accordance with the markings, make holes for dowels in the wall using a puncher and attach the casing to them with self-tapping screws. Similar manipulations are performed for the remaining parts.

Installation of window casings

Installation of the plastic trim is carried out after placing the frame. First, the surface is marked with a coated thread, stretching it from edge to edge from the bottom and top of the opening. The width of the casing is added to each point.

Mounting order:

  1. Attach the base to the mounting location and draw a line at 45 degrees from the corner of the window.
  2. Mark with a pencil on the coating.
  3. Cut off the excess along the marked line.
  4. Apply special glue for plastic to the inside of the product and to the wall.
  5. Press the block well, ensuring that adjacent elements are tightly joined.
  6. Wipe off any remaining glue.
  7. The lower casing is secured with bolts by drilling 3-4 slots in the wall and the product. Add a little glue to each hole and screw in the bolts.
  8. Treat the places where the cash is connected to the wall with glue.

Wooden cashing is installed on a blind or through tenon. In the first case, the mounting holes are invisible, since the spikes are placed in sockets on the products or base. With the through type of installation, through holes are made into which dowels are installed.

Blind tenon fastening is carried out in the following order:

  1. Marking the surface and frame for tenons.
  2. Making slots. Hard wood is used for spikes. The size of the fastener must exceed the required diameter by 0.5 mm.
  3. Processing the dowel with glue, placing the element in the hole. Placing the coating on the fastener.

Installing window casings correctly is not difficult, but the process requires care and precision. If deviation is allowed, the fastening will be unreliable. After installation, it is necessary to treat the surfaces with paint, varnish or stain.

Approximate prices

The cost of the platband depends on the material, type of profile and manufacturing technology. The most affordable are flat products made from sheet PVC - you can purchase such products for an average of 20 rubles per linear meter. More expensive and functional, platbands with space for laying communications. A set with a front profile that imitates common types of wood will cost about 40 rubles per meter.

The most expensive products are made of high-quality polyurethane using the extrusion method. Such platbands imitate relief carvings and are intended for facade and architectural decoration. The price starts from 1,500 rubles for a one and a half meter element with a maximum width of 200 mm.

What are window trims

The platbands on the openings are a frame for protection and beauty. They come in different widths, but to achieve a unified composition they are painted in similar colors and made from the same materials.

The main function of the elements is to close the technological gap between the main opening and the wall. They are installed to give the structure a finished look. If you simply cover the gaps with insulation, you will not be able to completely prevent the penetration of moisture, noise and dust into the room. The appearance of the opening will be sloppy.

The cash register standardly includes 4 parts:

  • strapping from below and from above;
  • 2 strips on the sides.

Installation of cash on windows can be done using a tenon or end-to-end. They do not experience any load, so it is enough to tightly attach the parts to each other and secure them.

If the window structure has a sill, a lower casing is not needed. Then the window sill is installed first, and then the side and top strips.

The width of the harness depends on the wishes of the owner and is determined taking into account the following:

  • unhindered opening of the valves;
  • cashing covers the frame by 5-10 mm.

Plastic and PVC

There are two types of synthetic plastic trims:

  • Manufactured by extrusion;
  • Made by casting or pressing.

Structurally, they can be solid or consisting of two parts (mounting strip and decorative cover), monolithic or hollow.

According to their intended purpose, plastic trims can be used for doors and windows.

PVC casing with cable duct

Technical characteristics are often regulated by technical specifications. Each manufacturer independently develops its own specifications or uses already approved ones that suit its technical capabilities and commercial needs. But for plastic products it becomes mandatory to obtain fire and environmental certificates.

Plastic platbands are certified according to hygienic standards (GN) GN 2.1.6.1338-03 and GN 2.1.6.2309-07.

Molded PVC profiles for interior decoration

GOST 19111-2001 applies to profile-type PVC products with a shaped cross-section. These products are used in all types of premises and buildings.

Product classification

They are classified and designated according to the indentation deformation indicator:

  • Made from hard grades of PVC (marked with the letter “Zh”);
  • From semi-hard varieties (marked “PZh”);
  • Platbands are not made from soft varieties (marked “M”).

Rigid and semi-rigid are divided into 2 types:

  • Basic (designated “ZhO”, “PZhO”);
  • Auxiliary (designated “ZHV”, “PZHV”).

Lining, platbands, plinths, fasteners, tubes are made of rigid or semi-rigid material.

DIY window trims

You can add individuality to your building with the help of hand-made window trims. The owner will choose the color, material, pattern and thickness to his taste.

How to make slotted trim yourself

Every owner wants to decorate a room beautifully. If the house is not new, the procedure will require a lot of effort and money. Carved configurations on the windows will add individuality to an apartment or private building. This way you can even renovate an old building and give it a second life. The building will look unusual and stand out from the rest.

Slotted cashers are best made from pine. The raw material is easy to cut and even a beginner can handle it.

The process occurs in the following order:

  1. Transfer the pattern to the board. Clearly outline the lines. You can prepare the template yourself or use a ready-made one.
  2. Make the cuts by drilling large holes along the lines where the wood needs to be removed.
  3. Use a jigsaw to cut out the pattern without going beyond the edges of the line.
  4. Process the edges if the configuration is curly.
  5. Saw the board to the marked line.
  6. Cut wood from areas where there should be voids.
  7. Sand with a machine, drill with an emery wheel or by hand with sandpaper. The manual method is best used only for hard-to-reach places.
  8. Treat with primer to create a protective layer.
  9. Paint it. Wood oils are best for this. They are well absorbed and the products are easier to care for. In the future, it will be necessary to clean the dirt and apply a new layer every 1-2 years.
  10. Put in cash.

DIY metal window blocks

Metal cashers are easy to make using ordinary tools. This does not require any special skills. You need 2 sheets of iron 0.7 mm thick to make the side casings and the top and bottom. Drawings with a pattern on whatman paper or wallpaper are attached to the bottom one. To make it convenient to work, you need to place 2 tables at a short distance from each other. Cutting should be done in this interval. The process is then performed in the following order:

  1. Using an electric drill, drill holes in the corners of the image. For work you need to use an 8 mm drill.
  2. Cut out the pattern.
  3. Sand the edges with sandpaper.
  4. Drill and rivet the blocks.
  5. Paint if necessary.

Kinds

Flat

Made from aluminum, polyurethane, plastic and wood. This type is the most popular because it is not expensive and at the same time easy to care for during operation.

At the same time, it is worth mentioning about easy installation. As a result, the opening looks neat and aesthetically pleasing.

carved

These options can be made of either natural wood or plastic. However, this option is not suitable for everyone, due to design features.

Carved type models are not too cheap, as they are mainly made to order.

It is quite problematic to find carved window frames on sale, since their mass production is not organized everywhere and not on such a large scale.

Shaped view

In this case, the part has a smooth semicircular surface. It has a relief pattern, which is made of special strips that are sunk to different depths.

This option is made from almost all materials used in production.

Profile

They can be made of polyurethane, wood, aluminum and other bases. In cross-section, such models may have too intricate a shape.

Details about the purpose of platbands

We have already mentioned the decorative function of the platbands in the preface, but it is necessary to separately note that the originality and identity of a wooden house is 80% created precisely through the artistic framing of window and door openings.

Moreover, thanks to platbands, the same project can be completed in completely different styles.

What should platbands hide?

The range of design solutions in this case is limitless: from simple houses made of timber, decorated in the spirit of modern minimalism, to luxurious fairy-tale castles, decorated with wooden carvings and amulets.

The second and no less important function of casings is the insulation of polymer materials used to seal installation gaps from exposure to ultraviolet radiation and moisture. No matter how manufacturers talk about the exceptional durability of polyurethane foam covered with a waterproofing film, it still remains a polymer composition, and even with a porous structure.

It is important to take into account that the destruction or even partial deformation of such sealant immediately affects the thermal insulation properties of the house, therefore, from this point of view, cashing out windows is not only technologically justified, but also necessary.

Expansion gap

Let us separately note one more specific point, characteristic only for wooden houses, and which makes the installation of external frames for windows mandatory. We are talking about a compensation gap between the casing and the upper edge of the window opening. The task of the platband is not only to cover the “unpresentable” appearance of a 7-centimeter bag made of jute stuffing, but also to isolate this area from dripping moisture.

Are platbands always needed? No not always. In cases where the window is mounted in a finished casing, theoretically there is no need to install an external frame, with the exception of the top strip and visor covering the compensation gap. However, due to the total use of PVC windows, this option is extremely rare today.

Blitz tips

  1. Plastic window frames have advantages: they do not dry out, unlike wooden ones, and are not susceptible to biological damage with the same functions. There is an opportunity to improve sound insulation and heat retention properties. Representing the edging of windows with any profile, they have unlimited aesthetic possibilities for construction. It is quite reasonable to give them preference when choosing.
  2. When choosing, an important factor is the installation method. If latches (clips) are selected, then it is necessary to check their functional condition. They should not be deformed.
  3. You can, of course, do the installation yourself. But the highest quality installation is possible when concluding a turnkey contract. Specialists have the necessary experience and skills.
