Installation of plastic windows

The service for installing plastic windows is widely in demand. Satisfying customer demand, firms and enterprises try to offer PVC windows in a wide range, to suit every taste and budget.

The craftsmen do the dismantling and alignment of window openings themselves. Proper installation of the entire structure in the opening and insulation is an extremely important process. The craftsmen will monitor how correctly and strictly the frames are installed horizontally and vertically. For this, a building level is used. Special wooden wedges or adjusting plates will help, if necessary, level the frame.

Types of openings

The article contains information to help you learn how to take measurements correctly. This information should help you decide to take measurements yourself or invite a specialist.

It would seem that it is difficult to determine the dimensions of the frame. Place a tape measure on the old frame and write down the width and height measurements.

Before starting work, you need to find out what type of building the house belongs to and what features the window openings have.

About 80 percent of the housing stock has a design called a quarter window. With this option for constructing buildings, the outer part of the wall on the street side is made slightly larger than the wall on the living room side. An L-shaped protrusion is formed.

The difference can be from 5 to 10 cm, larger values are less common. Ideally, the protrusion should be equal to a quarter of the length of a standard brick, approximately 6.5 cm. Hence the name - a quarter.

The protruding outer part can be made around the perimeter, on all four sides, or located on only two sides, for example, top and bottom or left and right.

There are houses of another type of construction, in which the dimensions of the outer and inner parts of the wall are the same - this is the so-called straight opening. This configuration is used in the construction of private brick houses. Sometimes, visually, it seems that the slopes run perpendicular to the walls, due to the fact that they were additionally leveled using a concrete mixture.

In this case, when dismantling the old glazing, the parameters of the frame can increase significantly due to the destruction of the built-up slopes. Sometimes even a qualified technician from the company cannot see such nuances.

In some houses there is a reverse quarter. It is named so because the outer walls are shorter than the inner ones. This type is used at the end of the house.

You need to carefully approach the determination of the parameters of PVC products if the type of opening in the apartment is with a reverse quarter.

What does a plastic window consist of?

The standard design of a plastic window consists of a frame onto which the sashes are attached. A double-glazed window with the required number of cameras is installed in the sash. At the request of clients, slopes, window sills, ebbs, and mosquito nets can be added to the window set.

Plastic windows can be of any shape. Rectangular is the most common option, but there are also arched and round windows. It all depends on the structural features of the window opening.

The designs differ in the number and method of opening the doors. The simplest one is a single sash. The standard option is 2 or 3 sashes. They can be rotary, sliding, tilt-and-turn and blind.

Features of installation in a wooden structure

Due to shrinkage characteristic of wooden buildings, it is recommended to install metal-plastic windows in them at least a year after construction, and preferably after two. If the house is built from laminated veneer lumber, the holding time can be reduced, since this building material is made from well-dried wood and therefore shrinks very little.

The window is first fixed in a wooden frame made from bars soaked in antiseptic, and then installed in this form in the opening. The frame serves as a protective frame that prevents deformation of the window in the event of shrinkage of the structure. To minimize the effect of this phenomenon, a gap of 3–7 cm wide is left between the wooden frame and the upper edge of the opening (depending on the moisture content of the wood and, accordingly, the expected amount of shrinkage). The gap is filled with stuffing made of jute insulation.

The wooden frame is attached to the opening with self-tapping screws.

Since wood has some vapor permeability, the mounting foam used to seal cracks must be protected from moisture. For this purpose, the wooden frame and the ends of the wall in the opening are covered with tape made of thin polyethylene foam coated with foil.

Before installing a metal-plastic door, the doorway must be equipped with a so-called frame. It is also a frame made of timber and is designed to protect the door from the impact of a shrinking wall. In addition, the posts of the frame fasten logs or beams, the connection between which weakens somewhat after the opening is constructed.

The frame protects window and door blocks from deformations that occur during the shrinkage of the log house

To install the frame, vertical grooves with a cross-section of 50x50 mm are cut out with a router in the side walls of the opening. Stands are inserted into these grooves. Next, boards with a thickness of 50 mm and a width equal to the thickness of the wall are nailed to them, parallel to the walls of the opening.

A threshold made of a T-shaped beam 100 mm thick is nailed from below, and a horizontal jumper (top) is nailed from above. The top should push the posts apart, and a gap of 15 cm should be left between it and the upper wall of the opening. The gap is filled with jute insulation and covered on both sides with vapor barrier tape.

Stages of installing plastic windows

The entire procedure for installing plastic windows can be divided into stages:

  • Freeze. An important stage of preparation. The accuracy of the measurement determines how the window frames will be inserted and the amount of mounting frame. If you didn’t get the size right, you’ll have to knock off part of the window openings; if the window is smaller, problems arise with fastening and the amount of polyurethane foam increases, which is extremely undesirable.
  • After the measurer transfers the parameters to the manufacturing plant, window production begins. It is important to discuss the design features of frames and double-glazed windows in advance with the customer and choose a profile. The most popular profile manufacturers: Rehau, KBE, Montblanc, Veka and others.
  • After production, the windows are delivered to the customer. By agreement, not only delivery, but also lifting is possible. After delivery, a time for work is scheduled.
  • Preparatory work before installing windows includes dismantling old structures. It is important to carefully dismantle and remove construction debris so that it does not accumulate under the new windows and window sill.
  • The actual installation. The window frame is placed in the prepared opening. To ensure that it stands up straight, use mounting wedges and a building level. Level installation of the frame is very important for the further operation of the window. The frame is fastened with bolts on 4 sides, the seams are sealed with polyurethane foam.
  • After the window is installed, finishing work is carried out: installation of ebb, slopes, window sill, sealing of seams, gluing of corners.

Features of the work and installation requirements

Installation of PVC windows is a process that is strictly regulated by current standards. A properly installed structure lasts longer, is less susceptible to negative environmental influences, looks attractive and allows the owner to create a comfortable indoor microclimate. Defective installation or manufacturing of windows leads to the fact that the structure lasts much less and requires additional costs for maintenance or replacement after several years of use. Our craftsmen comply with all GOST requirements, namely:

  • Install the window system evenly, with minimal horizontal and vertical deviation.
  • The seams are installed in 3 layers, which ensures high water and vapor barrier.
  • Attach the windows to blocks and spacers in the corresponding holes.
  • To securely fix the structure, anchor rods and plates are used, placing them at equal intervals.

Compliance with GOST recommendations provides the window system with reliability, strength and durability, and also allows you to avoid defects and additional costs when installing windows.

Average prices for the service

This figure is calculated depending on the need for 1 m2 of glazing area. In interregional markets, the discrepancy between prices is 15-20%, the highest in Moscow and the Moscow region.

Average prices for dismantling PVC windows:

  1. Facade glazing from 700 rub.
  2. Dismantling PVC windows for a one-story wooden house, 300 rubles.
  3. Dismantling PVC windows for a one-story stone house, 400 rubles.
  4. Dismantling PVC windows in a multi-storey building, 550 rubles.
  5. Dismantling of window sills, slopes and ebbs, from 200 rubles/m2.
  6. Departure of a specialist to an object up to 20 km, 1200 rubles.

The dismantling price includes cleaning and garbage removal after completion of the work.

What tools are needed?

Despite the high labor intensity of such an operation, the performer will not need to have complex equipment; it will be enough to purchase the following tools:

On the plastic frame, all necessary marks are made with a regular pencil. After installation is complete, traces of it can be easily removed with ordinary dishwashing solution.
