Shutters, decorative interior shutters for windows

Interior shutters and shutters are the same thing. These elements of window structures were invented several thousand years ago, but the invention was forgotten for some time. However, oblivion did not last forever and today they are increasingly used instead of traditional blinds. Although window shutters are installed mainly in rooms with a classic interior design style, their scope of application is constantly expanding. Find out in our review what these interior shutters are, where they can be used, what they are made of and what their benefits are.

What are shutters?

Shutters are hanging structures that protect interior spaces from sunlight and decorate the interior.
They are a combination of internal shutters and blinds. Such designs look impressive and are easy to use. Classic shutters are wooden. They were invented in Ancient Greece and consist of frames, inside of which horizontal lintels (lamellas) are installed. In our time, these designs have found a second life in the USA, from where they came to Europe and Russia.

The number of frames and the complexity of the design are determined by the dimensions of the windows. Shutters can be installed both inside and outside openings. They do not interfere with the operation of the windows at all, since the internal shutters can be opened at any time and the active sashes can be swung open. Properly designed shutters allow you to fully ventilate the interior even when closed. Such shutters are sometimes called interior shutters, since they become the dominant element in the room and set the tone for the rest of the environment.

Shutters are rotary shutters

Shutters are rotating wooden shutters that are not only visually attractive, but are also one of the most functional and durable window decoration products. They create warmth, coziness and comfort in any room. They will be appropriate both on the windows of an apartment and in a country house. The main advantages of shutters: they prevent direct sunlight from entering the room, which preserves the appearance of furniture and wall decoration for a long time; they are a means of significant energy and cost savings: in the warm season they act as a natural air conditioner - by opening the window, without opening the shutter, you get freshness and coolness in room. In winter, shutters prevent the entry of cold air and reduce heat loss; they are easy to use and maintain; they create a special atmosphere, give their owners aesthetic pleasure, and distinguish the appearance of the windows from others.

Advantages of interior shutters

Shutters not only shape the interior and provide protection from the sun and overheating. They can be safely called multifunctional elements of window structures. In addition to the main advantages, installing interior shutters allows you to:

  • increase the level of sound insulation of windows - an additional barrier is created in the path of street noise;
  • improve security - the presence of lockable shutters makes it difficult to break into and requires more time to enter the interior;
  • protect objects from fading - shutters block UV rays;
  • get rid of “dust collectors” - curtains and curtains.

If the internal shutters on the windows are wooden, they improve the microclimate in the rooms and make the interior more respectable. It is for this reason that these elements of window structures are used when decorating expensive mansions and private cottages. Shutters are easy to care for and do not put a high load on the walls in the openings. A thoughtful design allows you to quickly remove dust from slats and frames. If necessary, the shutters can be wiped from the inside at any time.

When considering the advantages of interior shutters, do not forget about the disadvantages. There are significantly fewer of them than advantages. The main disadvantage of shutters is that when installed inside an opening, in most cases they make it difficult to use the window sill as a multifunctional piece of furniture. To open the doors, you often have to move potted flowers and other objects aside or remove them. Sometimes the cost of shutters is also considered a disadvantage, but this is a subjective evaluation criterion. In addition, in any case, instead of shutters, you have to buy curtains, curtains and blinds, so it is incorrect to talk about a significant increase in the cost of window structures.

Okoume is a tropical wood from the large mahogany family, carefully selected specifically for the production of shutters. Lightness and natural strength, hardness, stability and durability make okoume the best material for making shutters. In addition, okume is very beautiful - it has a pattern like oak. Okume also has a natural feature - microscopic pores filled with air, they make okume a heat absorber - with a thermal conductivity coefficient tending to zero... Okume shutters will significantly reduce your electricity bills and over time the money you save will only increase!

What is the difference between plastic and wooden shutters?

Shutters made of plastic are usually used outside or in very damp areas. Plastic is much cheaper than wood, so plastic shutters are used in low-budget projects or temporary projects. In addition, plastic shutters are less durable - their service life does not exceed 12 years. In addition, the older the plastic, the more harmful substances it releases into the air.

What are shutters made of?

One shutter is called a panel. The different components make up the shutters panel. Each panel has slats and a frame. All parts of our shutters are made of solid wood.

How do shutters work?

Depending on the project, your shutters can move on a rail or be suspended on hinges, or they can fold like an accordion. Sometimes both types of fastening are used - it all depends on the location of the shutters in the house.

At what point in the repair should I invite a shutter specialist to take measurements?

You need to order Shutters at the stage of preparing the walls and ceilings for finishing, while they are being manufactured, the final finishing and installation of the floors will take place - you can install the Shutters only when all the wet and dirty work is completed, the wallpaper is hung, the ceilings are painted, the floors are laid - cleanliness and beauty everywhere !

Will the shutters block my beautiful view from the window?

No. Shutters improve panoramic views because they “frame” the space.

How often should shutters be painted?

If the coating has received mechanical damage, it must, of course, be painted over. And so, in the realities of ordinary life, the answer is no way, shutters will last you a lifetime without the need to paint them. Only if you are changing the style of the entire house, then repainting it in a different color may really be necessary - but that's another story!

How long will it take to install shutters in my home?

Depending on their quantity.

An experienced master places 1 shutter in 1 window in 2-3 hours. The shutters come completely ready for installation; no sawing or drilling is required.

What are interior shutters made of?

Classic interior window shutters are made of natural wood. They are impregnated with fireproof and antifungal mixtures, and then covered with paints and varnishes. Some shutters can be additionally decorated with forged elements. Thanks to increased technological capabilities, manufacturers today have expanded the list of materials used. The list included:

  • polistil – extruded plastic;
  • metal – most often aluminum;
  • composite materials.

The use of polymer and composite materials has made it possible to use interior shutters together with PVC windows. Some manufacturers of profile systems offer single-color structures and structures laminated with wood-like films for installation in internal openings.

Types of shutters by opening method

Interior shutters differ not only in the material they are made of, but also in the design of the shutters. Shutters are installed on windows using different mechanisms. This allows you to choose the most convenient opening method for any window opening. Also, the use of different devices for opening the shutters allows you to influence the design of interior shutters. There are currently several types of systems available.

Swing

Internal shutters with the traditional method of opening the shutters are usually installed in openings with a small width. Depending on the area and installation method, they are equipped with hinges with an opening angle of 90° or 180°. When choosing them, it is necessary to ensure that the shutters and slopes do not touch and do not damage each other during operation.

Lifting

This system ensures that the shutters open in a vertical plane. Most often, such a mechanism is chosen to equip small-sized single-leaf structures. To hold the sash in a vertical position, the system is additionally equipped with special fittings.

Folding

One of the most popular methods of opening interior shutters has a second name - “Book”. This system consists of 2 types of hinges - hinged and connecting. With the help of the former, the structures are attached to the walls, and the latter are used to join adjacent sashes. Thanks to this opening system, the shutters swing open and fold at the same time. They are recommended for installation in wide openings. Since they are made using narrow sashes, such interior shutters do not require much space outside the window or doorway to open fully.

Swivel and slide

This combined system is recommended for installation in wide doorways. It is also often used when equipping large high windows. The opening mechanism consists of a sliding system and connecting hinges. The simultaneous use of these two devices allows narrow sashes to simultaneously fold and slide to the side, freeing up the opening. This combined system can also be called “Accordion”, since the shutters, when moving, are somewhat reminiscent of the bellows of a musical instrument.

Sliding

With this method of opening, the sashes of the internal shutters move apart in different directions in a plane parallel to the window. In practice, classic sliding systems are used quite rarely, since their operation is associated with some difficulties:

  • when installing sliding shutters inside the opening, only half of the window can be opened;
  • If the shutters are mounted on the wall, there should be enough space on both sides of the opening for retractable shutters.

To avoid such problems, it is recommended to give preference to a tilt-and-slide system. It requires significantly less space to open and, with any installation method, allows you to completely free up the light opening.

Shutters can be opened either traditionally manually or automatically. It is recommended to equip heavy and vertically rising shutters, as well as structures located in hard-to-reach places, with electric drives.

Panels and strips of internal shutters

Both solid panels and transverse strips (lamellas) can be used as internal filling of the frames. When choosing the first option, you need to take into account that such shutters in the closed position do not allow light to pass through at all and do not allow you to regulate the intensity of its entry. The functionality of shutters with slats depends on their modification:

  • with stationary slats - they transmit light, but do not allow the intensity of the light flux to change;
  • with rotating slats - designed to change the intensity of the light flux and allow you to completely darken the interior.

The width of one shutter leaf can range from 200 to 950 mm. When the height of the shutters exceeds 1800 mm, it is recommended to separate them using a fixed lintel. This will give the structures the required rigidity and prevent loosening. The maximum permissible height of the shutters is 3 meters. In general, their dimensions are tied to the dimensions of window and door units, which are regulated by GOST.

The lamellas can have a rectangular or elliptical shape. Their width varies from 31 to 114 mm. If the internal shutters are wooden, this parameter usually does not exceed 61 mm. Moreover, the width of the slats is directly dependent on the dimensions of the shutters - the larger the shutters, the wider the transverse slats.

A short video of the production:

Shutters (Russian equivalent - shutters) are a frame structure made of high-tech material Polystyle©, which is similar in properties to wood, but does not have its disadvantages. Adjustable horizontal slats (slats) are attached inside the frame, which makes the shutters look like blinds. This design is easily mounted directly into the vertical sides of the window opening, which allows you to open and close the shutters (hence the name - to shut) and easily remove if necessary. In addition, you can use these models for roof windows and openings of complex shapes (oval, arched, round). The color palette is wide enough for the most demanding client (according to the RAL color system - more than 400 colors or for any type of wood).

THE SHUTTERS THEMSELVES ARE PRACTICAL AND DURABLE

They withstand frost and humidity, do not fade, and are easy to clean if necessary (either using a vacuum cleaner on the window or under running water using detergents). Tested in harsh Russian climatic zones.

In North America, in construction, shutters are a mandatory attribute of the interior in the loggia, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, and in the window openings of basement rooms. Shutters are widely used in the design of office premises as office partitions.

Shutters easily fit into the interior and in combination with tulle curtains.

In the production of these products, only specialized and certified equipment is used, as well as all types of materials and accessories made in the USA.

Our company participated in the NTV program “Dachny Otvet” as a manufacturer of shutters in this program:

Scope of application of shutters

The main area of application for interior shutters is private households and apartments with expensive classic renovations, as well as shops and bars with appropriate interiors. However, recently the use of shutters has not been limited to these objects. Thanks to the expansion of the list of materials used and fresh design solutions, today interior shutters can be found in offices and residential premises with a modern interior. The compatibility of plastic structures with windows made of PVC profiles has further expanded their scope of application, making shutters universal sun protection elements.

When interior shutters are installed, interior solutions allow you to radically change the design of rooms at minimal cost. These elements set the tone for the entire setting and look much more solid than ordinary blinds with horizontal slats. Today, blinds are still used much more often than shutters, but the ratio is gradually changing in favor of internal shutters.

Window shutters - shutters

An alternative to traditional blinds are interior shutters for windows - shutters, which are also called interior shutters. Such products were used several thousand years ago, then they were forgotten. But in recent years, shutters are gaining popularity again. They are used today mainly in premises for various purposes with a classic interior - private houses, apartments, small shops, bars, cafes. But, thanks to the variety of design solutions, you can choose a model for a home or office decorated in one of the modern styles.

What are shutters?

Shutters are hanging structures that serve to protect rooms from sunlight and decorate the interior. That is, they perform the same functions as blinds. Actually they are a combination of blinds and internal shutters. Such designs were invented in Ancient Greece, where they soon became a common item in the homes of wealthy citizens. They found a second life quite recently in the USA, from where the fashion for interior shutters began to spread to European countries and Russia. Shutters can be installed both outside and inside window openings; in any case, they do not hinder the operation of the windows.

Design and material of manufacture

The complexity of the design of interior shutters and the number of frames in them depends on the dimensions of the window. For the internal filling of frames, solid panels or transverse strips (lamellas) are used. In the case of using solid panels, it must be taken into account that the structure will only have two positions - open and closed. It will not be possible to regulate the amount of natural light; closed shutters will not let the sun's rays into the rooms at all. Shutters with lamellas have different functionality, depending on their modification:

  • stationary slats allow light into the room, but do not allow you to adjust the intensity of the light flux;
  • rotating slats make it possible to change the intensity of the light flux, with their help you can completely darken the room.

The dimensions of interior shutters are determined by the regulated sizes of window blocks. Their maximum height can be 3 meters. At a height of more than 1800 mm, manufacturers use a stationary jumper, which will increase the rigidity of the structure and prevent loosening of individual elements. The width of the sashes and lamellas varies, and the wider the sashes, the wider the transverse slats of the structure will be. The lamellas can have not only a rectangular shape, but also an elliptical one. Shutters can be opened either manually or automatically.

In the classic version, shutters are made of wood. These are the models that are used in the arrangement of private cottages and respectable mansions. They not only look presentable, but also improve the microclimate in the room. The wood is of course impregnated with anti-fungal and fire-resistant mixtures and covered with paints and varnishes. Forged elements are sometimes used for decoration.

For modern interiors, models made of extruded plastic, aluminum and composite materials are better suited. Such designs go well with widespread metal-plastic windows. They are produced both in white color and using lamination technology, including wood-like films.

Opening method

Modern manufacturers offer shutters with different opening methods:

  1. Swing. They are usually installed in openings of small width.
  2. Sliding. They are used quite rarely, because they require a sufficient amount of free space on both sides of the opening. In addition, when installed inside an opening, only half of the window can be opened.
  3. Foldable. One of the most popular, suitable for wide window openings.
  4. Lifting. They open in a vertical plane and are used on small-sized single-leaf structures.
  5. Swivel and slide. Optimal for equipping high-dimensional windows. Also used in doorways.

Advantages of internal shutters

First of all, interior shutters are beautiful. They look more noble and elegant than the usual blinds. The products “set the tone” for the environment and allow you to change the design of the room at minimal cost. They also have a number of more practical advantages:

  • increase the level of sound insulation of the window structure (serve as an additional barrier to street noise);
  • act as a barrier to sunlight, making the room more comfortable for people and protecting interior items from fading;
  • allow you to get rid of curtains and curtains, which have to be periodically removed, washed and hung back on the window;
  • increase the level of security of the premises (locking shutters will make it difficult for intruders to enter the premises through the window and slow them down).

Such elements also have some disadvantages, although unimportant for most homeowners. For example, they make the use of the window sill more limited and make it difficult to access. They will also cost a little more than traditional blinds. But this is explained only by the greater distribution of the latter. Shutters are becoming increasingly popular, which will lead to high competition among their manufacturers and a gradual decrease in cost.
